show highlight of the week: tomorrow (sunday 6/19) is the monthly seaweedsway showcase at the make-out room. it's father's day, so bring your dad (if you want)!

this month, we have a rocking line-up, with ruckus rousing folk-rocker Obo Martin otherwise known as Freckle Face, the pop/rock/psychadelic soul tunes of FpodBpod, & female-fronted folk rock explosion Fox & Woman. From il gato: We are looking for a band to fill a rehearsal slot at Secret Studios (2200 Cesar Chavez, SF, CA). You would have to share a drum set (yours or ours) with one of the current bands due to lack of space, though there is ample rehearsal and storage space for your band in the room. Obo Martin's band "Freckle Face" are a pack of Romp Stomping, Ruckus Rousing, San Franciscan folk Rockers in tweed jackets and corduroy trousers playing a full range of storytelling songs from sentimental to completely mental..dont be surprised if you find yourself along doing a jig while the Rafters Roar.

Tom Edler who plays bass for Indianna Hale & Slow Motion Cowboys will be joining Obo on this magical eve, and Joe Miller of Os Beaches will be playing drums for both Obo and FpodBpod. Other band members TBA.

FpodBpod
The brainchild of San Francisco's Sean Olmstead, fpodbpod is founded upon the principal tenet that pop music should be catchy while intriguing but always fun to listen to. Bringing an eclectic mix of influences--from the Kinks to Kraftwerk to Jonathan Richman to Gershwin--into the songs, fpodbpod re-contextualizes principles of soul, psychedelia and garage rock. Much the way that the Velvet Underground borrowed elements of soul and old school rock and roll, fpodbpod reminds us that POP is the common thread between all these styles of music we know and love.

While the recordings are historically a one-man operation, with Olmstead writing, performing and recording all the parts, fpodbpod's live shows often borrow the talents of local favorites such as Os Beaches' Joe Lewis & Joe Miller, the Blank Tapes' Matt Adams, Indianna Hale, Will Halsey of Ash Reiter's band, and many others (seriously, there are too many to name). As well, the coming weeks will see the start fpodbpod's first collaborative studio work, helmed by producer and local legend, Chuck Gonzales.

Fpodbpod's catchy, thoughtful rhythms; quirky, memorable--and sometimes unexpected--lyrics, and heartfelt energized delivery will lead you to the dance floor and temporarily ease your troubles, or at least allow you to boogie with them.

Fox & Woman
Fox & Woman is a female fronted folk rock explosion.

The band consists of Jess Silva on ukulele and vocals, Emily Haltom on violin and vocals, Julie Indelicato on guitar and vocals, Andrew Paul Nelson on Mandolin, and Jen Norero on drums.  The band formed around a street poetry scene in the Mission district and started writing songs walking home from bars.

This acclaimed modern classical artist, film composer and Devics co-founder performs with Magik*Magik String Quartet. "All haunting, minor key strings and moody, softly tinkled piano melodies, on first listen composer Dustin O’Halloran’s latest release seems to have little relation to the optimism-hinting light of the title. Bleak and soaked in introspective emotion, Lumiere is a record that seems to brood and wallow, with a cinematic scope that builds upon the introspective minor key melodies of the two solely-piano records that preceded it.... Whilst the strings may be perennially stirring and strained, O’Halloran deliberately minimises the solace and despair of the lower stringed instruments. MAGIK*MAGIK STRING QUARTET
The Magik*Magik Orchestra is founded by artistic director Minna Choi. Its mission is to simplify the collaborative process between independent rock musicians and classical artists. The Magik*Magik Orchestra is the official studio orchestra of Tiny Telephone founded in 1997 by local Dead Oceans artist, John Vanderslice. The Magik*Magik String Quartet is an off-shoot ensemble of the Orchestra.

CONSPIRACY OF VENUS
Last show of the season, until fall! This season CoV had a whirlwind of shows, one of the highlights being the Pixies UnderCover Tribute, where Conspiracy of Venus covered "Monkey Gone to Heaven" off the album Doolittle. Conspiracy of Venus is a women's community a cappella group based in SF. The women of CoV interpret director Joyce Todd McBride's daring & inventive arrangements of songs ranging from the classic (Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi) to the cutting edge (Bjork's Possibly Maybe). The group's repertoire also includes works by Bill Withers, Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Roger Miller.

IL GATO, INDIE-FOLK-ROCK BAND, NEEDS MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST

Hello, local SF band, il gato (http://www.ilgato.com), are in need of a multi-instrumentalist who can play trumpet/flugelhorn and an additional instrument, ideally one of the following:  Piano, Guitar, Accordion, Banjo, etc.

We are a serious band with a good track record, grand aspirations, and are looking for a talented musician who shares our aspirations and the associated commitments and wants to be a part of an on-going creative project. We all sing, we help write songs and we want this to be an awesome experience. We intend to record our next album in the Fall and tour in 2012. We are looking for a band to fill a rehearsal slot at Secret Studios (2200 Cesar Chavez, SF, CA). You would have to share a drum set (yours or ours) with one of the current bands due to lack of space, though there is ample rehearsal and storage space for your band in the room. PANIC IS PERFECT
Incorporating afro – pop rhythms, retro synthesized sounds with well crafted song writing and pseudo-spiritual lyrical sensibilities Panic is Perfect has created their own brand of quirky eclectic indie dance pop.


Jeremy Belzer and Mike Hoffman officially started the group as an acoustic duo while traveling in south India together in the spring of 2010. Since then the San Francisco based group has evolved into the 5-piece band it is today. They are currently working on their debut album set to be released in the fall of 2011.

DINA MACCABEE
Dina Maccabee is a violist, violinist, vocalist, and songwriter living in San Francisco. Her new album of original songs was released on October 12, 2010 in collaboration with Toby Summerfield on Antephonic Records. In addition to her work with Ramon and Jessica and Real Vocal String Quartet, she performs in many styles and many bands, from Middle Eastern Psych Rock to 60′s Brazilian Tropicalia. INDIANNA HALE

While her greatest influence is a good friend Matt McCluer, Indianna’s writing style developed with notable inspiration from Hank Williams, the Staple Singers, and the Magnetic Fields.  She now plays with a supporting band and takes inspiration mostly from “…Sunshine, riding bikes and the salty wind of the beach. It’s California rock, filtered through a ‘lonesome gospel pedal', with a little country swing and a splash of rain.”

AVA MENDOZA
Guitarist Ava Mendoza starts from old melodies already tattooed on your brain, then applies sufficient heat to peel that paint leaving you re-pinked and wondering what’s next. What’s next are original compositions, heavy, gorgeous, oddly reverby, layers that build, blister and flake away to alight indelibly on your mind. Just as Mendoza reprises those traditional tunes, you discover she’s walked you far into a lost countryside. How, or whether, to get back will be your own business.
