TONIGHT! Dina Maccabee and the Excellent Spellers + Holly Mae and the Painted Room @ MILK! 2011 locally-made Calendars! Kacey Johansing and Rad Cloud @ Amnesia Thursday! Comedy @ the Rusty Nail Sat. Jan. 8th!

Hello!
Happy holidays and happy end of 2010! What a year. We made it. (3 more days) Thanks to all of you who have hung out at shows this year, and to those who have stayed on this list even if you can’t make it to the shows, yoga classes, swaps, etc. :) Hope to see you all TONIGHT for a special post-holiday (or mid-holiday if NYE counts as a holiday?) SeaweedSway show with Tenderfoot, Dina Maccabee and the Excellent Spellers, Holly Mae and the Painted Room (in town from Germany!), and the Sylvain Carton Quartet featuring Autonomos Rogers at MILK! folk-jazz-pop-awesomeness in the upper haight across from Amoeba Records. If you're in town, don't miss it! theme ideas have gone through a great progression, you decide what the theme is for you: regifting -- xmas gifts trends --ipads -- ipads with milk on them (if you’re really feelin’ it) -- drunken magi -- scarf night --sing-along night

Get more excited about the show tonight by going here: http://seaweedsway.blogspot.com/2010/12/wednesday-tenderfoot-dina-maccabee.html

Since I'm always encouraging you to mark your calendars, which I hope you'll do when you read the list of shows below, if you still need a calendar for 2011, I recommend you get the Poor SF Bastard's Almanac and Weekly Organizer! it's like a slingshot in that it's a work of art and is home-made, but it's locally focused as well. it has all sorts of neat relevant info - free museum days, last BART times, moon phases, pesticide levels of common produce, which anti-gay companies to boycott, supervisor's contact info, ukulele fretboard and chords, etc. email Stephen at SFresourceGuide@gmail.com to buy them direct (and pay less - only $8) or pick one up at dog-eared books, Needles Ånd Pens, or other local bookstores.

On a slightly different note, if you want some stress-relieving yoga this weekend to start 2011 relaxed and rejuvenated: I’m teaching Gentle Hatha on Saturday 12:30-2 and Restorative Yoga Sunday 6:30-8 at the Yoga Loft. Details at http://theloftsf.com or email me if you have questions.

Thanks again for supporting SeaweedSway in 2010! if you're in the bay area, hope to see you tonight and at as many of the events below that you can find your way to! Happy New Year. ~jessie

TENDERFOOT
Tenderfoot is the solo project of Seattle-based songwriter Adam Boehmer. Fueled by a year-long road trip across the US in a vintage camper-trailer, Adam's music is marked by sparse lyrics and loose, rhythmic guitar. His goal is to create an atmosphere for storytelling, lamentation and simple celebration.

DINA MACCABEE and THE EXCELLENT SPELLERS
"Dina Maccabee is a San Fran native with a very catchy and unique new CD under her belt. With "Who Do You Suppose You Are?", Dina manages to put the shoegaze/depressive-ness of Leona Naess, the quirky instrumental parts of Feist and the almost soulful singing of She & Him's Zooey Deschanel into a blender to create a smooth sound that's both light-hearted and heartfelt. And most importantly all her own." -- Stereokiller.com

"Dina is working a cafe/folk/pop vein that puts me in mind of Edith Frost, Laura Veirs, and Maria Taylor. Listening to her myspace tracks, there’s a real sweetness to her music and some beautifully streamlined song craft. Also, she’s working with a notably great band. I’ve seen Eric Kuhn drum with Built for the Sea and Sillian Rail and am pretty well stunned by his playing. With Eric Perney on bass and Roger Riedelbauer on electric, Dina has a fantastic working unit." -- Will Boast,

HOLLY MAE and THE PAINTED ROOM
Holly Mae and the Painted Room is a Berlin-based, acoustic Art Folk band originating from California. The group's lyrics-oriented music and pre-polished, porch-swing sound aim to plumb the personal and ring harmonic with the universal. Holly Mae draws inspiration from myths and tragedies, children's stories, outsider art, and science. Primary influences include Joni Mitchell, Neko Case, Joanna Newsom, Sufjan Stevens, Bob Dylan, Daniel Johnston, and Bonnie Prince Billy. Holly Mae was raised on an organic farm on the California central coast. Her childhood was steeped in folk music and she started writing songs as a teen. She began playing out in the 1990s in the acoustic side of the riot grrrl scene, where she opened for Sleater-Kinney at the Goleta Women's Festival, under the name La Sullen Teen in 1996. After college Holly Mae assembled an acoustic folk band, the interludes, in 2005, and eventually formed Holly Mae and the Painted
Room in 2007 in Detroit, Michigan.

SYLVAIN CARTON QUARTET
Originally from France, Sylvain Carton is a multi-instrumentalist and composer currently residing in San Francisco.  An accomplished saxophonist and guitarist, Sylvain tours and records regularly with John Vanderslice and a number of groups representing a variety of musical genres and traditions, such as The Mitch Marcus Quintet, Aphrodesia, The Japonize Elephants, Spaceblaster, Khi Darag, Lord Loves a Working Man, Beats Antique, and The Garlando Nonet.

The Carton Quartet succeeds in blending Sylvain's many influences into an unconstrained jazz format.  Allowing the music to veer from balkan-esque metric changes to a subtle latin american Milonga or locking into solid grooves amidst hard-swinging melodic passages, the music of this quartet is anything but reserved.  Utilizing the instrumentation to its fullest (tenor sax, guitar, bass, drums) the arrangements pass the lead and supportive roles throughout the ensemble keeping the listener engaged in the dynamic interplay within the music.

The Carton Quartet features Autonomous Rogers which is one of the Bay Area's most unique rhythm sections.  Comprised of Mike Abraham on guitar, George Ban-Weiss on bass and Eric Garland on drums, this sub-section of the quartet is the driving force behind the music.

SEAWEED SWAY
SeaweedSway is an evolving project by Jessie Woletz and friends, with an intention to encourage, cultivate, and support community through music, yoga, and nature events. SeaweedSway presents music shows and events, featuring musicians and artists who share similar creative intentions. SeaweedSway was a term first used by Karl Blau and Jessie to describe the awesome way people danced during BrightBlack Morning Light at a Great American Music Hall show, then it became a list of recommended events in the Bay Area, and now SeaweedSway presents shows of all kinds.
