This month, we have a rocking line-up, with ruckus rousing folk rocker Obo Martin aka Freckle Face, the pop/garage rock/psychadelic soul tunes of FpodBpod, & female fronted folk rock explosion Fox & Woman. Jeremy Dalmas and the Absurdists, the entertaining hosts of each SeaweedSway Showcase, will be performing a soap opera between sets.

The night promises to be extra fun, full of dancing, energetic songs, surprises, thorough enjoyment and good times, basically everything you could ever want in a show... as the full moon wanes and we dance right upon the threshold of summer solstice.

Below are stories, videos, & song links for the bands... Any help spreading the word is greatly appreciated.

Obo Martin aka Freckle Face

Obo Martin's band "Freckle Face" are a pack of Romp Stomping, Ruckus Rousing, San Franciscan folk Rockers in tweed jackets and corduroy trousers playing a full range of storytelling songs from sentimental to completely mental..dont be surprised if you find yourself along doing a jig while the Rafters Roar.

Tom Edler who plays bass for Indianna Hale & Slow Motion Cowboys will be joining Obo on this magical eve, and Joe Miller of Os Beaches will be playing drums for both Obo and FpodBpod. Other band members TBA.

Obo Martin just completed a 30 days of song project where he posted a new song everyday, which you can view by going here: https://www.facebook.com/video/?of=1607804083  (If you're not a friend with Obo on thee facebook yet, you may want to become one to view the videos & stay up to date on all of his future shows!)

FpodBpod

The brainchild of San Francisco's Sean Olmstead, fpodbpod is founded upon the principal tenet that pop music should be catchy while intriguing but always fun to listen to. Bringing an eclectic mix of influences--from the Kinks to Kraftwerk to Jonathan Richman to Gershwin--into the songs, fpodbpod re-contextualizes principles of soul, psychedelia and garage rock. Much the way that the Velvet Underground borrowed elements of soul and old school rock and roll, fpodbpod reminds us that POP is the common thread between all these styles of music we know and love.

While the recordings are historically a one-man operation, with Olmstead writing, performing and recording all the parts, fpodbpod's live shows often borrow the talents of local favorites such as Os Beaches' Joe Lewis & Joe Miller, the Blank Tapes' Matt Adams, Indianna Hale, Will Halsey of Ash Reiter's band, and many others (seriously, there are too many to name). As well, the coming weeks will see the start fpodbpod's first collaborative studio work, helmed by producer and local legend, Chuck Gonzales.

Fpodbpod's catchy, thoughtful rhythms; quirky, memorable--and sometimes unexpected--lyrics, and heartfelt energized delivery will lead you to the dance floor and temporarily ease your troubles, or at least allow you to boogie with them.

Fox & Woman

Fox & Woman is a female fronted folk rock explosion.

The band consists of Jess Silva on ukulele and vocals, Emily Haltom on violin and vocals, Julie Indelicato on guitar and vocals, Andrew Paul Nelson on Mandolin, and Jen Norero on drums.  The band formed around a street poetry scene in the Mission district and started writing songs walking home from bars.

Equinox SeaweedSway Showcase with AudiaFauna, Au Dunes (Graves), and Ariel Eisen!! Come see AudiaFauna while they're still playing small venues; it's an honor to have them headline this show. With their talent, they are soon to be selling out the Great American Music Hall or comparable places; but perhaps because they are residents of Santa Cruz, they are keeping it real, and growing authentically yet rapidly. Au Dunes is a new project from Greg Olin of Graves; and we're excited to have them as a feature of this month's SeaweedSway Showcase. Greg, a part of the Bay Area folk family (i.e. friends & sometimes sharing bandmembers w/ Kacey Johansing, the Blank Tapes, Magic Leaves, FpodBpod, the Range of Light Wilderness, etc.), happens to be traveling through from Portland just in time for the monthly showcase. We know it will be good. Ariel Eisen will open the show with her skillful folk-jazz vocals and artistic glowing presence. Jeremy Dalmas and the Absurdists will make us laugh and probably get at least a few people to come up on the stage with them, in between sets... An early Sunday evening showcase, every third Sunday of the month!

audiafauna
Audiafauna is an emerging band that combines powerful female vocals with soaring strings and hints of electronica to create a refreshing sound that is soulful and sublime. Their music is a true collaboration of minds and hearts. Combining the genres of indie-folk, pop, hip-hop, and soul, they can be likened to the powerhouse vocals of Florence & the Machine, the impassioned hunger of Cat Power, and the curiosity of Cocorosie. What they've created is uniquely their own however, and they deliver music with striking sincerity, transcending whatever personal preferences listeners might hold.
Front-woman Kelly Koval is enrapturing, and her heartfelt words are matched by the powerful sound that springs forth from her lips. The band provides a dynamic canvas for Kellys magic. Violin and cello deliver both rich melodies and chunky chops, upright bass solidly fuses melody and groove, reverb-drenched keys and gritty guitar flush out the sound, while a motley mix of drums and electronics flow as a single instrument. The resulting sound is uncharted yet nostalgically familiar; it speaks directly to our human experience, arriving like a long-awaited breath of fresh air.

au dunes / graves
Greg Olin of Portland's folk-pop-rock group Graves, has new and exciting project Au Dunes, with friends Sam Farrell and Zac Barbery. The group is so new, there is no bio yet for them, but here is info on Graves and Olin that is still applicable:

Olin specializes in a songwriting style which can be reduced to its minimum components — vocal and guitar — and still work. But life is too short and friends/musicians are too plenty not to enhance the writing with a more traditional band sound: drums, bass, keys, horns, etc. Olin has discovered a perfect synthesis of intimate songwriting with enhanced, rule breaking instrumentation that one usually associates with the likes of Wilco and others. Perhaps more than ever, Olin’s music sounds like the man behind it: utterly sincere, slightly off kilter, instantly likable.

ariel eisen
“Why be a critic when you could be starring in the play?” Ariel Eisen has given and gathered pieces of her life in many different places, from Florida to Seattle, New York to Brazil, California to Hawaii. She seeks to exist in playful harmony with the earth and carefully mend holes in the fabric of our society. “I have used art and music as tools throughout my life to stay in touch with my true nature and to uncover the essence of whatever I am focusing on.”
Ariel draws inspiration from a vast spectrum of artists and styles. From folk geniuses, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, to jazz greats Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to the breezy bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim. She also credits an array of fellow artists and friends as equally important sources of inspiration. Her music is reminiscent of an earlier era, while her messages examine the personal and universal realities of our times. Ariel merges unique, potent and insightful lyrics, with an angelic voice and jazzy guitar. Her cross-generational style inspires listeners to rexamine reality with hope and honesty.

The next SeaweedSway Showcase has even more than usual going on, and it's my birthday!! So it's going to be a February birthday party potluck, which fits well with the food name bands and full hunger moon on Feb. 18th! *Jeremy Dalmas & the Absurdists hosting the night away! Will Jeremy bring cookies? *Too good to be true! (but it is)
*President's Day is the next day, so many people have the day off - easier to stay out late!
SUGAR CANDY MOUNTAIN
http://www.myspace.com/smokedturkey Sugar Candy Mountain is the vehicle for Will Halsey's flights of pop fancy. When he's not drumming for Ash Reiter or The Blank Tapes, Will is concocting his own Grade A ear candy, drawing from an inspirational well filled with Beach Boys-style vocal harmonies, electronic dance-pop, sunny good vibes and songwriting that recalls the golden era of fun-in-the-sun 1960s pop music. Will and his great big band of friends and co-conspirators - featuring members of The Blank Tapes, fpodbpod, and the backing bands for Ash Reiter and Anna Ash - are plotting to win your heart with irresistible sweetness. They plan to succeed. This show will be the live debut of Sugar Candy Mountain! ALAMEDA
http://myspace.com/alamedaportland Alameda is a five piece band composed of guitar, violin, cello, clarinet, and drums w/ members of AgesandAges, Crooked Fingers, and the Portland Symphony. They have been compared to the likes of Nick Drake and Low. They're touring in support of their upcoming debut album. Their average national draw is: 50 people. Their myspace is: www.myspace.com/alamedaportland "Alameda, sports a fluid lineup that crafts melancholy, atmospheric songs that teeter between folky simplicity and chamber-music lushness. Besides stepping up to the microphone, [Stirling] Myles has switched from bass to guitar; Alameda's debut EP, The Floating Hospital, reveals his hushed and tranquil songwriting, a solid core around which revolves the outfit's baroque yet stark multi-instrumentalism." - Jason Heller, Westword "You have your acoustic guitar singer-songwriter backed by a lush group of musicians. This is a formula that when done well, I do not tire of. There are a few people who do this around town, most notably Horse Feathers. But I assure you there is no Horse Feathery occuring in this music. It is its own thing. Perfect for the current cold and rain filled atmosphere that has take[n] Portland over." - Ben Meyercord, Crappy Indie Music Blog "Alameda's luminous, spare melodies suggest solitude without loneliness and the peace of fruitful introspection. Like the work of early Low, the latest songs from Alameda are soothing yet haunting and possessed of a delicate immediacy." - Thomas Murphy, Music Editor "...currently enjoying the release of their EP The Floating Hospital, a stoic four-song set of moving, minimalist acoustic-based tunes. Vocalist/guitarist Stirling Myles (also of Autopilot is for Lovers, also a contributor to The Deli Portland) stirs lush melodies with ample yet subdued accompaniment from bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello and other various effects-laced gadgets that, when dialed in correctly, evoke a melancholy, though cathartic kind of slow-burn orchestral-folk." - Ryan Prado, Deli Portland Mike Midlo/ PANCAKE BREAKFAST
http://myspace.com/pancakebreakfastmusic http://blog.limewire.com/posts/51043-album-review-pancake-breakfast-%E2%80%93-pancake-breakfast-noise-nest/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+limewiremusicblog+(LimeWire+Music+Blog) Pancake Breakfast is a nine-member roots machine from Portland, Oregon. Most of these songs were made-up on a little farm, far away from the big city. Mike Midlo wrote them. He tested each one by singing it to the dog and chickens before playing it for the band. That seemed to work out pretty well. The members of Pancake Breakfast like to have a good time. You can hear that on their debut full-length record. Sometimes they holler and make loud noises. You can hear that on the record, too! All the tracks were recorded by Mike Coykendall (She & Him, Blitzen Trapper, M. Ward) in a comfy house near a dormant volcano.

EVER ISLES
San Francisco based dream folk duo of Kaitlyn Smith & Jeremy Harris.

FULL HUNGER MOON or FULL SNOW MOON - FEB. 18TH
"Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February’s full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult."

WEDNESDAY: Buxter Hoot'n, Mark Matos and Os Beaches, and Magic Leaves! SUNDAY: Sea of Bees' Chasing the Moon + SeaweedSway w/ Kelly McFarling, Sandy's, and Backlit! WED 1/19: Conspiracy of Venus @ Cafe du Nord!!

hello and happy 1-11-11! any big new years resolutions/intentions??
...this week & next, please save the dates & save your dates for so many good shows...

Wednesday, SeaweedSway presents Buxter Hoot’n, Mark Matos & Os Beaches, & Magic Leaves @ Bottom of the Hill! (a mix of psychadelic-folk-rock-americana) I’m excited for this one - it’s gonna be more rocking than some of the other shows SeaweedSway has presented, at a venue with a rocking history - have seen some of my favorite all-time shows there... and I know this will be another! Good way to celebrate the middle of the week (really) - only $8 for a fun night - bring friends and/or make new ones!!

Sunday is the SeaweedSway Showcase! Live music from Kelly McFarling, Sandy’s,& Backlit + Sea of Bees’ Chasing the Moon episode premier! Jeremy Dalmas & the Absurdists will be hosting & re-enacting old game shows between sets. Sandy’s is Alexi Glickman of the Botticellis & Little Wings, joined by Steve Taylor on keys & Jeremy Black of Apollo Sunshine on drums. Backlit is a project of Deborah Steinberg from Conspiracy of Venus. We are celebrating the Full Wolf Moon (or Full Old Moon), which actually falls on Wednesday of next week (we’re early). only $7. 7:30-11 so you can get to bed in time to sleep in time to get up for work on Monday - but wait! Many people have Martin Luther King Jr. Day off, so even more reason to come and hear good music and stay out a little later. See you there!

Next Wednesday, on the night of the actual Full Wolf Moon, Conspiracy of Venus will be singing our hearts out at Cafe du Nord, co-headlining with neo-soul-jazz supergroup The Congress. Opening will be jazz singer Mindi Hadan, sharing her unique blend of R & B influenced, country flavored, jazz standards. Conspiracy of Venus is an alt-choir I’m in - we sing the songs of Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Bill Withers, Juan Tizol/Duke Ellington, Joyce McBride (our director), & more. Tickets are $10 & we encourage early purchasing at http://cafedunord.com This will be our last SF show singing a full set until the Spring.

Speaking of dates, & saving them, if you still need a calendar for 2011, I still recommend the Poor SF Bastard's Almanac & Weekly Organizer! it has all sorts of neat locally relevant info - free museum days, open mics, last BART times, moon phases, pesticide levels of common produce, which anti-gay companies to boycott, supervisor's contact info, ukulele & guitar fretboard & chords, MUNI OWL map, etc. email Stephen at SFresourceGuide@gmail.com to buy them direct (& pay less - only $8) or pick one up at dog-eared books, Needles Ã…nd Pens, or other local bookstores.

Thanks for reading & hope to see you Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, & next Wednesday! :) SERIOUSLY! (It's the New Year's SeaweedSway Challenge.) If you're out of town, please still check out the links & listen to some good SF music, and as always, feel free to pass this message along.

The Congress
Marcus Cohen founded this project in summer of 2009 when he first met guitarist Vic Wong, drummer Jayme Arredondo, and bassist Mark Allen Piccolo. They then began to lay the foundation for what is now known as The Congress- a mesmerizing 12 piece ensemble of musicians, vocalists,a spoken word artist, and an emcee. The idea was inspired from Marcus' love for "soul, jazz, funk, hip hop, and gospel."

Conspiracy of Venus
Conspiracy of Venus (CoV) is a women's community a cappella group based in San Francisco. Under the artistic direction of Joyce Todd McBride, the 40 women of CoV interpret McBride's daring and inventive arrangements of
songs ranging from the classic (Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi) to the cutting edge (Bjork's Possibly Maybe) with dazzling technical verve and tons of personality. The group's repertoire also includes works by Bill Withers, Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Roger Miller.

Conspiracy of Venus has played to sold out crowds at many San Francisco venues, including The Great American Music Hall, The Palace of Fine Arts, The Independent, The Swedish American Hall, The Rickshaw Stop, The Make-Out Room, and others, sharing bills with the Mother Hips, Or, the Whale, John Vanderslice, The Mountain Goats, Blame Sally, Emily Jane White, and Rupa and the April Fishes, to name a few. The choir is active in community service. They have performed at Dublin State Correctional Facility and played benefits for the Awamaki Peruvian Women's Weaving Collective, The Gulabi Gang, The Ursa Freedom project, In Search of Good
Food, and the Fairmount Elementary FestiVal. Wherever the group performs, Conspiracy of Venus is hailed by audiences as a groundbreaking musical experience.

Mindi Hadan
MINDI HADAN, a rising star on the San Francisco music scene, has been playing to Standing Room Only audiences at the popular nightclub, "Jazz At Pearl's" with her unique blend of R & B influenced, country
flavored, jazz standards.

Born in Nebraska and raised in Texas, Mindi had a true musical education from the Heartland. The youngest of eight children, Mindi grew up singing in the church choir. She spent every Sunday night watching Lawrence Welk, which lead to forming an Acapella four part harmony singing group with her sisters. During these formative years, Mindi's mother introduced her to Big Band music, Polkas and Yodeling.

A turning point of "living in the sticks" was when Mindi discovered the discount cassette bin at the local gas station with $1.99 collections of Patsy Cline, Connie Francis, Judy Garland, and surprisingly, Marilyn Monroe. This eclectic treasure chest was the beginning of Mindi's musical alchemy of combining styles and bringing new interpretations to vintage classics.
