IN SEARCH OF GOOD FOOD film + benefit for EarthShare CA tonite! BEEHAVERS CD RELEASE + magic leaves friday! CONSPIRACY OF VENUS + michael musika saturday! JOSEPH CHILDRESS, rock falls, + assateague sunday! (weekend @ amnesia)

hello everyone,
there are 4 more shows that i'm involved with in october - tonight through sunday - & then a little break until november. here goes...
................

tonight! i'm very excited to finally get to see antonio roman-alcala's film, in search of good FOOD, documenting and interviewing a variety of players in CA's sustainable food system. (features some music from slow motion cowboys!) ALSO, it's a benefit for the non-profit i've worked at for 7 years, earthshare california. we raise $ for over 80 environmental non-profits, covering a spectrum of issues & topics - clean air & water, healthy sustainable food, land conservation, care of the great sea, mountain lions, desert tortoises, and beyond. it's at el rio in the outer mission, and is gonna be a really fun night. pocket full of rye is playing music after the film, then there will be a few more local films. networking happy hour 6-8 to start the night. would mean a lot to see you there!

Tuesday Oct. 18th --> In Search of Good Food Film & Benefit show for EarthShare CA (where I work!) at El Rio, with live music by Pocket Full of Rye. Songbird Fest Presents!

then, this weekend, i'll be living at amnesia apparently. friday is the long-awaited beehavers' cd release. and to add to the glory, they are releasing not one but two cd's. what?!!! gypsy voodoo folk-rock-n-roll at it's finest. arborea from maine are opening. i've heard some of their songs and am in awe and intrigued. beautiful. magic leaves are closing off the night with some psych-folk-rock joy for our souls. can't wait. unmissable. this show is worth changing all your plans to attend.

"hushed & haunting" joseph childress will end the night with his moving & powerful renditions of stories  ~waves of sound to move us along. opening the night is this band i've literally been listening to on repeat since two weeks ago, when i first heard of 'em. my new favorite band. assateague. they're local, don't play out much & are gracing us with their songs on this night. really important to arrive early & see 'em! doors at 8:30, show at 9. this is also a long-awaited collaboration w/ seaweedsway & arvel hernandez's collective project, endless nest.

DUSTIN O'HALLORAN
This acclaimed modern classical artist, film composer and Devics co-founder performs with Magik*Magik String Quartet. "All haunting, minor key strings and moody, softly tinkled piano melodies, on first listen composer Dustin O’Halloran’s latest release seems to have little relation to the optimism-hinting light of the title. Bleak and soaked in introspective emotion, Lumiere is a record that seems to brood and wallow, with a cinematic scope that builds upon the introspective minor key melodies of the two solely-piano records that preceded it.... Whilst the strings may be perennially stirring and strained, O’Halloran deliberately minimises the solace and despair of the lower stringed instruments. On Lumiere, he opts for violins where others may have chosen cellos - herein lies the intelligence and many layers of O’Halloran’s work." --Drowned in Sound

MAGIK*MAGIK STRING QUARTET
The Magik*Magik Orchestra is founded by artistic director Minna Choi. Its mission is to simplify the collaborative process between independent rock musicians and classical artists. The Magik*Magik String Quartet is an off-shoot ensemble of the Orchestra.
CONSPIRACY OF VENUS
Last show of the season, until fall! This season CoV had a whirlwind of shows, one of the highlights being the Pixies UnderCover Tribute, where Conspiracy of Venus covered "Monkey Gone to Heaven" off the album Doolittle. Conspiracy of Venus is a women's community a cappella group based in SF. The women of CoV interpret director Joyce Todd McBride's daring & inventive arrangements of songs ranging from the classic (Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi) to the cutting edge (Bjork's Possibly Maybe). The group's repertoire also includes works by Bill Withers, Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Roger Miller.

PANIC IS PERFECT
Incorporating afro – pop rhythms, retro synthesized sounds with well crafted song writing and pseudo-spiritual lyrical sensibilities Panic is Perfect has created their own brand of quirky eclectic indie dance pop.
http://www.facebook.com/panicisperfect
http://podcasts.pcrcollective.org/DiamondDave/DiamondDave-20110520.mp3 HEAR PANIC IS PERFECT play a Bob Dylan cover + a couple of their own songs on Diamond Dave's radio show - they start about mid-way through the podcast

DINA MACCABEE
Dina Maccabee is a violist, violinist, vocalist, & songwriter who plays in Ramon and Jessica & the Real Vocal String Quartet, as well as many other styles & bands, from Middle Eastern Psych Rock to 60′s Brazilian Tropicalia. For this show, the Dina Maccabee will include Ezra Lipp on drums, guitarist Roger Riedlbauer, & bassist Tom Edler -- plus special guest Karina Denike on vocals & a new song!

INDIANNA HALE
While her greatest influence is a good friend Matt McCluer, Indianna’s writing style developed with notable inspiration from Hank Williams, the Staple Singers, & the Magnetic Fields.  Her band for this show features Tom Edler on bass, Sean Olmstead on guitar, Joe Miller on drums, & guest vocalist. Indianna takes inspiration mostly from “…Sunshine, riding bikes and the salty wind of the beach. It’s California rock, filtered through a ‘lonesome gospel pedal', with a little country swing and a splash of rain.”

AVA MENDOZA
Guitarist Ava Mendoza starts from old melodies already tattooed on your brain, then applies sufficient heat to peel that paint leaving you re-pinked and wondering what’s next. What’s next are original compositions, heavy, gorgeous, oddly reverby, layers that build, blister and flake away to alight indelibly on your mind. Just as Mendoza reprises those traditional tunes, you discover she’s walked you far into a lost countryside. How, or whether, to get back will be your own business.

DUSTIN O'HALLORAN
This acclaimed modern classical artist, film composer and Devics co-founder performs with the local ensemble. "All haunting, minor key strings and moody, softly tinkled piano melodies, on first listen composer Dustin O’Halloran’s latest release seems to have little relation to the optimism-hinting light of the title. Bleak and soaked in introspective emotion, Lumiere is a record that seems to brood and wallow, with a cinematic scope that builds upon the introspective minor key melodies of the two solely-piano records that preceded it. This penchant for the filmic is no accident. O’Halloran cut his teeth creating music for advertising and the silver screen – his impressive résumé includes credits for Sofia Coppola’s decadent fuchsia-fest Marie Antoinette and the seemingly obligatory Teutonic car advertising. This cinematic background is clearly apparent on Lumiere and makes the album a fantastic catalyst for the imagination. Indeed, Lumiere does at times sound like the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic world – all slow motion billowing smoke and grey skied desolation. At times it’s a harrowing listening experience but a strangely rewarding one all the same. Dig a little deeper however and you’ll find a warmer heart hidden away amongst the ruin and rubble - nuggets of optimism not apparent at first.

CONSPIRACY OF VENUS - Season Finale!

Last show of the season, until fall! This season we had a whirlwind of shows, one of the highlights being the Pixies UnderCover Tribute, where Conspiracy of Venus covered "Monkey Gone to Heaven" off the album Doolittle. Conspiracy of Venus is a women's community a cappella group based in SF. CoV sings original arrangements of contemporary music. Under the artistic direction of Joyce Todd McBride, the 40 women of CoV interpret her daring and inventive arrangements of songs ranging from the classic (Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi) to the cutting edge (Bjork's Possibly Maybe) with dazzling technical verve and tons of personality. The group's repertoire also includes works by Bill Withers, Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Roger Miller. Conspiracy of Venus has played to sold out crowds at many San Francisco venues, including The Great American Music Hall, The Palace of Fine Arts, The Independent, The Swedish American Hall, The Rickshaw Stop, The Make-Out Room, and others, sharing bills with John Vanderslice, The Mountain Goats, The Mother Hips, Blame Sally, Emily Jane White, and Rupa and the April Fishes, to name a few.
