IN SEARCH OF GOOD FOOD film + benefit for EarthShare CA tonite! BEEHAVERS CD RELEASE + magic leaves friday! CONSPIRACY OF VENUS + michael musika saturday! JOSEPH CHILDRESS, rock falls, + assateague sunday! (weekend @ amnesia)

hello everyone,
there are 4 more shows that i'm involved with in october - tonight through sunday - & then a little break until november. here goes...
................

tonight! i'm very excited to finally get to see antonio roman-alcala's film, in search of good FOOD, documenting and interviewing a variety of players in CA's sustainable food system. (features some music from slow motion cowboys!) ALSO, it's a benefit for the non-profit i've worked at for 7 years, earthshare california. we raise $ for over 80 environmental non-profits, covering a spectrum of issues & topics - clean air & water, healthy sustainable food, land conservation, care of the great sea, mountain lions, desert tortoises, and beyond. it's at el rio in the outer mission, and is gonna be a really fun night. pocket full of rye is playing music after the film, then there will be a few more local films. networking happy hour 6-8 to start the night. would mean a lot to see you there!

Tuesday Oct. 18th --> In Search of Good Food Film & Benefit show for EarthShare CA (where I work!) at El Rio, with live music by Pocket Full of Rye. Songbird Fest Presents!
networking happy hour 6-8pm, film & music 8pm, $7-15 sliding scale

then, this weekend, i'll be living at amnesia apparently. friday is the long-awaited beehavers' cd release. and to add to the glory, they are releasing not one but two cd's. what?!!! gypsy voodoo folk-rock-n-roll at it's finest. arborea from maine are opening. i've heard some of their songs and am in awe and intrigued. beautiful. magic leaves are closing off the night with some psych-folk-rock joy for our souls. can't wait. unmissable. this show is worth changing all your plans to attend.

"hushed & haunting" joseph childress will end the night with his moving & powerful renditions of stories  ~waves of sound to move us along. opening the night is this band i've literally been listening to on repeat since two weeks ago, when i first heard of 'em. my new favorite band. assateague. they're local, don't play out much & are gracing us with their songs on this night. really important to arrive early & see 'em! doors at 8:30, show at 9. this is also a long-awaited collaboration w/ seaweedsway & arvel hernandez's collective project, endless nest.

The Beehavers, FpodBpod, Montra @ Amnesia Friday! Walk Like An Egyptian Music Fest/Fundraiser May 7th/8th

hello!
hope you all are doing well, enjoying the approach of the new moon.

show highlights this week.

Friday, April 29th, SeaweedSway presents the Beehavers, FpodBpod, & Montra @ Amnesia

The Beehavers are a gypsy voodoo folk n' rock n' roll band led by singer/songwriter Bryant Denison. A blend of '80s new wave leanings with laid back folk & pop, topped off with a hint of Johnny Cash's rockabilly drawl, a splash of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' kicked-up blues, and the roving gypsy vibe of bands like Devotchka & Beirut. Bandmembers include Jake Nochimow on drums, Zach Rubin-Rattet on guitar, Mike Fortes on bass, Erma Kyriakos on violin, Leo Suarez on cello.

Learn more about the Beehavers:
Parlour to Parlour Episode: http://popdose.com/parlour-to-parlour-episode-28-the-beehavers or just the music video, outside of a North Beach hat shop! http://youtu.be/2e1XaJ2TZjk
"To Your Freedom" SF pillow fight video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=RXyKqKFra9c

FpodBpod is founded upon the principal tenet that pop music should be catchy while intriguing but always fun to listen to, and is the brainchild of Sean Olmstead. Bandmembers for this show include the ever-talented Joe Lewis on bass and Joe Miller on drums. FpodBpod's catchy, thoughtful rhythms; quirky, memorable--and sometimes unexpected--lyrics, and heartfelt energized delivery will lead you to the dance floor and temporarily ease your troubles, or at least allow you to boogie with them. (i.e. dancing is highly encouraged)

"Neon Lights" Kraftwerk Cover: http://youtube.com/watch?v=FiLOXK7qdx

Montra is a bit mysterious, being off the grid at the moment, but here's what we know now. They feature members of Vows and Shalants and are highly recommended from those who have heard them. To be more specific, the band is currently comprised of members Ratchet, Jawbone, Sando, and Gaspar, all active San Franciscan musicians. Friday, April 29th at Amnesia they will be joined onstage by Gen. Redbeard and promise to fulfill all prophecies. Not a bad deal. In fact, this whole show promises to fulfill any and all prophecies, guaranteed or your money back. And it's only $7. Starts at 9pm. http://bit.ly/april29rsvp

SeaweedSway on Valentine's Day!
What better way to spend Valentine's Day than with Honeycomb, Chloe Makes Music, & Magic Leaves singing to you??? Even better, and most importantly, this is Chloe's long-awaited album release show!!! Her new cd, The Puppeteer, was produced by Chris Chu of the Morning Benders, plus she has a new lineup and new songs, and she's taking requests for old cheesy love songs! Josh Bruner of Magic Leaves is going to play a rare mellower acousticy solo set for the occasion; and this is Honeycomb's anticipated follow-up to their recent show at the Rickshaw Stop with Sonya Cotton.

Local indie-folk ensemble full of soul singing and nimble-fingered folks, with beats that you can groove to and feel down to your bones. "I was blown away at the gorgeousness of the five part harmonies of lead singer Emily Ritz, and backup vocalist Kacey Johansing. . . Those vocals combined with Nate Blaz on cello, Joe Lewis on upright bass and Andrew Maguire on vibraphone create a wall of sound that sucks you in." --Examiner.com
The band now includes local multi-instrumentalist Eric Kuhn (Silian Rail, Sean Hayes, Michael Musika).

CHLOE MAKES MUSIC
This is the long-awaited album release show for San Francisco folk musician Chloe Roth, aka Chloe Makes Music (CMM). Produced by Christopher Chu of the Morning Benders and recorded at San Francisco’s Different Fur Studios, CMM’s debut LPThe Puppeteer features a bevy of local musicians, including cellist Jen Grady (Adam Stephens, Emily Jane White), Sara Gambina-Belknap (The Bitter Honeys, Gamelan Sekar Jaya) on banjo, jazz great Noel Jewkes on clarinet, and Chu himself lending both instrumentation and vocals.

"…An impressive debut…Roth packs her sensitive songs with a torrent of words, line after line of images and emotions and interior rhymes in a kind of 19th century Victorian-style that sounds like a reincarnated Elizabeth Barrett Browning…All in all, a lovely package."

"Quirky and lithe-voiced…The Puppeteer showcases her talent for wordplay and storytelling."
The Bay Bridged

“…Lovely, haunting harmonies…a catchy melody of puppets still singing in my head.”

"…Folk-pop duos (Jenny and Johnny, She & Him, et al.) are a popular trend these days, so standing out is no easy feat. Chu and Roth’s “The Duel” holds its own against other charismatic efforts by their boy-girl contemporaries."

In October 2009, Deli SF readers voted Chloe Makes Music (CMM) their artist of the month. Around the same time, Chloe enlisted longtime friend, and frontman of the Morning Benders, Christopher Chu to produce her debut full-length record. The album sees a departure for CMM—from a pared down minimalism of guitar and cello to a larger, fuller sound. Chu brought his unique brand of arrangement to the panoply of instruments featured on The Puppeteer, which includes guitar, piano, violin, cello, harmonium, saw, accordion, banjo, clarinet, and glockenspiel.

Listening to CMM live, it’s hard not to be captivated; she typically plays to a silent and rapt audience. Her haunting songs weave stories of memory, loss, nature, and art, with what the Bay Bridged called “agile and buoyant melodies.” In her soft, vulnerable voice Chloe takes on dark narratives (three of the songs on the album are tributes to three young people who passed away in the last few years) and renders them heartbreaking and beautiful. Imbued with imagery from her upbringing on the California coasts and in the tropics and farmland of Kauai, CMM’s lyrics are a combination of the mythic and the quotidian (the track “Apollo & Daphne” is based on the myth as told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, while the track “Wormwood” begins with a bird hitting a window). Striking a delicate balance between autobiographical and tall tales, CMM’s meditated manipulation of words and her flair for alliteration, syntax, and rhyme, make each song nothing less than a sung poem.

Growing up listening to the greatest lyricists and harmonizers of her parents’ generation, CMM lists Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills & Nash as key influences, along with folk contemporaries like Joanna Newsom and Sufjan Stevens. Combining poetic, tongue-twisting lyrics with lush, multiple-part harmonies, CMM’s music is both timeless and inventive.
