Chasing the Moon (Birds & Batteries/ Joseph Childress), Sean Hayes & Obo Martin Thurs., Conspiracy of Venus Friday, Kacey Johansing Sunday

Hi everyone,
Here's a quick list of some shows & events coming up. Three great shows in a row starting tonight!

Tonight's show at Viracocha is in honor of the full moon, and the autumnal equinox, and Jupiter's brightness all lining up at once. Read more about this rare natural occurrence here: http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2010/22sep_harvestmoon/ and come to the show if you can!

This Chasing the Moon show will premier Birds & Batteries' episode, and we will have live music from The Up Died Sound, Pillars & Tongues, WR/DS, & Joseph Childress. Three of the four bands are on Empty Cellar Records, & this show is the second live event in celebration of the release of the debut studio LP, 'Good & Plenty' by Sword + Sandals (John Dwyer, Randy Lee Sutherford, Shaun O'Dell).

Thursday, on what I think is the actual full moon (or day 2 of it?), come and see Sean Hayes & Obo Martin play songs at the New Parish in Oakland. (Yes, Oakland!!! Worth the trek for those of us in SF, & near the BART.) Friday, come hear the choir I'm in, Conspiracy of Venus, sing our first show of the season, for free at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, in honor of a neat project involving ancient bowls that women used to write their secrets on. Early at 6pm. Sunday Kacey Johansing & two awesome Portland bands play at Amnesia.

Here's the list:

9-22 wednesday.
Chasing the Moon show at Viracocha w/ WR/DS, the Updied Sound, Pillars & Tongues, & Joseph Childress, featuring Birds & Batteries Chasing the Moon episode.
Viracocha is at Valencia & 21st, right next to ATA.

As it's the moon becomes full tonight, we'll be showing Birds & Batteries' Chasing the Moon episode for the first time! Birds & Batteries New Album, "Panorama", comes out on October 12th on Spune/ Velvet Blue, which you can get a little taste of through their Chasing the Moon episode. The episode will be shown at the end of the night, so we hope you can stick around to see it.

YOGA CLASSES:

These are the Ongoing Yoga Classes that I'm teaching these days. I would love to see you there!

Gentle Hatha Yoga Saturdays at the Yoga Loft.
 $10 Community Class. 12:45-2pm. 321 Divisadero St. @ Page. http://theloftsf.com
This class is a meditative movement exploration, a slower-paced introduction to the practice that is good for beginners as well as those who would like a gentle & less physically challenging class for any reason. Focus is on getting into the body, grounding, and bringing acceptance to the body in the present moment. Students are encouraged to quiet the mind, breathe, and use intuition in moving in conjunction with guidance on safe alignment.

Restorative Yoga Sundays at the Yoga Loft.
$10 Community Class. 6:30-8pm. 321 Divisadero St. @ Page. (This class happens weekly. Meg Whitbread, or another very wonderful sub, will teach on the 3rd Sundays because of the SeaweedSway showcase!)
This is different from a regular yoga class, in that you do less poses and hold them for a longer amount of time in a non-strenuous way, all propped up, so the body can relax more deeply. Focus is on the breath and gentle opening of places where we hold extra tension and stress... and on re-setting, exploring, and rejuvenating intentions.

Community Yoga @ the Caretakers House 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month.
848 Divisadero St. @ McCallister. 6:15-7:45pm. Important: Please RSVP if you can make it. Suggested donation of $5-10 but no one turned away for lack of funds, trades are welcome too.

Tickets: $9-$50 advance, $12 at the door. https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/126075
"Dave Mihaly's "Eastern Accents in the Far West" is delightfully far-reaching. Part free-jazz record in the grand tradition of masters like the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Ornette Coleman, the disc balances sensitive ensemble playing with melodic compositions and songs structures that reflect the width of Mihaly's experience. His collaborators in his Shimmering Leaves Ensemble - trumpet and horn player Ara Anderson (Tom Waits, Tin Hat Trio) and saxophonist David Boyce (Broun Fellinis). The group develops Mihaly's compositions with instrumental color created by harmonies and melodic simultaneous improvisation. Perhaps the main pleasure listeners will take from the music is its tunefulness unusual for a heavily improvisatory record from a trio of percussion and two horns. The haunting themes and melodies stay with you long after the music stops playing."

KILLBOSSA
Killbossa plays music based heavily on Tropicália, a political/artistic movement that arose in Brazil in the 1960s. This supergroup of Bay Area creative musicians gives the timeless music of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze and their contemporarie...s new shape and makes it all their own. Ranging from all-out crunchy psych-rock to quiet, subtle meditations, Killbossa can't hide its deep love for one of the most honestly raw and surreally beautiful musical traditions of the recording age.

VANESSA VERLEE & JEREMY ROURKE
vanessa verlee and jeremy rourke have been playing music and life together for the last nine years. they have performed all over the bay area and the country, and released five full length albums between the two of them. they both write songs that are full of enchanting images and compelling stories. when they play their songs together, their voices, guitars and energy are a delight to watch dance.

{seaweedsway}

SeaweedSway is an evolving project by Jessie Woletz & friends, with an intention to encourage, cultivate, & support community through music, yoga, & nature events. SeaweedSway was a term first used by Karl Blau & Jessie to describe the way people danced during BrightBlack Morning Light at a Great American Music Hall show, then it became a list of recommended events in the Bay Area. SeaweedSway now presents music shows & events, featuring musicians and artists who share similar creative intentions. Get updates of future events & stay connected through the links below:

tonight (thursday), for those of you who are plan-free thus far, there is a great show i want to tell (or remind) you about. it is presented by SeaweedSway, the wonderful Ginger Murray (Bees Knees Productions, Conspiracy of Venus & the Cat's Pajamas), and the amazing Chantelle Tibbs (of Kamp Camille, opening the show so get there early!). please come if you can!!!!! we are thinking of it as a pre-bluegrass festival warm-up as well as an end of summer celebration, reminiscent of real summers (in other lands) where there are fireflies and sticky humid breezes to warm your insides and yes, mosquitas in yo' grill (car grill, or bbq grill, or mouth grill even if you'd like). see you there??!
also, if you are up for taking pictures or writing a review or video-ing (for this or any shows), please let me know, as i'm always looking for help with that. a list of more events & some other fun things (job & housing list & yoga classes) are below as well.
thanks as always, see you soon!

Hear the bands on the radio:

Seaweed Sway and Ginger Murray present a night of four acts that are taking old style Americana and bringing it right into the 21st century. Mosquitas in Yo' Grill is a celebration of all that is bluegrass, fiddle funk, Fab folk, and rock rippin'. Like fireflies in a jar, empty dusty roads, rusted fenders, late nights on a porch where the willows weep and the hot air smells of honeysuckle and gasoline, this show will transport you to a place where summer really does exist and songs pause time for the sake of enjoyment.

Now, we invite you to read more about each of the bands, and click the links to hear them:

Buxter Hoot'n
Psychadelic Americana blues, this band defies all genres. Hot, high energy and full of soul, they will grab your guts by the throat, wrangle em' down and while doing it put a grin on your face wider than any desert sky. Their style is unique but never ironic and consummate musicians are they all. It is a joy just to watch them get down as it is sheer love of music that drives them.

Buxter Hoot'n's homegrown sound had its start in America's heartland, in Indiana, where brothers, Vince and Jimmy Dewald grew up and played music before moving to San Francisco. Songwriter, Vince Dewald, has since put together an ever-growing catalogue of songs that is both lyrically poignant and stylistically diverse.

From virtuosic violin and guitar riffs to guttural lyrical poetry in the tradition of Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt, Buxter Hoot’n sets itself apart by combining rock 'n roll musical complexity and intricate harmonies with traditional backporch roots and soul. Living and working together since the creation of the band they have created a cohesive and familial sound you can hear in the music and see on the stage.

Ben Andrews, lead guitarist and violinist, is one of the best young multi-instrumentalists in rock music and performs with that rare, fiery brilliance that can take over an audience in a moment. Drummer, Jeremy Shanok adds rhythmic sophistication and improvisation that often brings the band interplay to ecstatic heights. Vocalist, Melissa Merrill, is a star in her own right. Her blues soaked country vocals are instantly recognizable and uniquely her own. Vince Dewald's provocative vocals and guitar work, along with Jimmy Dewald's explorative bass style, perfectly completes the soulful, musical-stew that is Buxter Hoot'n.

Their first album, Here in America, released in 2007 was hailed by RELIX MAGAZINE as having "the independent rawness and creative brilliance that leads to a cult classic." Their new album, In Another Life, is a complete next step for the band. Recorded on the same 2-inch tape machine owned and used by The Grateful Dead to record their classic 1987 album, In the Dark, In Another Life, "is heavy with stellar musicianship and delivers a potent message... Buxter Hoot'n is single-handedly redefining contemporary Americana music and is the voice of their generation." (Ammuse Wordpress, NY)

Emily Bonn and the Vivants
Once a member of the amazing and fantastic Whoreshoes, Emily Bonn has high stepped out with her new version of the good old times where violins sing loud and cowboy boots smack hard. The Vivants perform original foot stompin' tunes about riots, hollers and hopping train cars. Largely inspired by the energy of old-time dance tunes, honky-tonk country and western swing, The Vivants play their own brand of American roots music, shining up dusty melodies with modern arrangements.

In former incarnations, Emily perfomed in San Francisco subway stations, Belgian prisons, Appalachian corner stores, and at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. As a former member of the critically acclaimed country band The Whoreshoes, she shared stages with the legendary rockabilly singer, Wanda Jackson, Old Crow Medicine Show and Devil Makes Three.

She is often accompanied by The Vivants, featuring stellar players, Anna Levitt on fiddle and vocal harmonies, James Touzel on upright bass, and Isaac Bonnell on piano accordion.

Emily's new debut CD, Songs from Alabama Street, features 7 new original tunes. Many talented SF Bay Area based musicians contributed to the recording such as members of The Whoreshoes, The Brother Comatose, Culhann's Hounds, The Lariats, Cheetahs on the Moon, and Middle Maki.

BrownChicken BrownCow StringBand
Hailing from West Virginia, these on tour cats have that true sound many try to copy, but they take that old string, raw wood beat and give an authenticity not seen in a long time. They kick ass but they'll give you a kiss and maybe a piece of pie afterwards. That is if if you wouldn't rather have a good mud wrassle in the backyard and eat fried chicken in a tree. "Our Music is writen to create a relationship with the listener, in the end relationships are the core of our musical inspiration... relationships with people, music, and places." Indeed.

Kamp Camille
They describe themselves as "guy/girl duo bliss." And they are. Songwriters Nathan Hughes and Chantelle Tibbs met while Nathan was performing in San Francisco. Off stage Chantelle complimented Nathan on how wiggly his knees are and the creme of collaborations was born. Two voices that were meant to be together under any circumstances. They are Americana Folk full of tall terrible tales, ambient passion, emotive smoke filled mirrors, rainwashed train windows and just a touch of moth flutter. For a little romp through the lives of cops, whores, one armed men, petrified poets and wayward woman listen deeply to their words beneath music that swells, plucks and will ultimately leave you hazy, summer day dreaming.
Nathan Hughes...co lead vocals, guitar, harmonica
Chantelle Tibbs...co lead vocals, various instruments
Kenan O'Brien...Upright Bass
Hoan Ton-That...Lead Guitar
Nathan Heintz...Keys

{GINGER MURRAY}
Ginger Murray is the editor-in-chief of Whore! magazine, and she puts on a monthly cabaret at the Make-Out Room called the Cat's Pajamas, featuring spoken word, music, dance, and performance art acts that are an ode to the cultural aesthetics of the past. Whore! magazine is a quarterly print publication dedicated to celebrating the current and historical qualities of women who have defined a role for themselves outside the status quo. Through written word, art, design, fashion, and music, Whore! magazine creates dialogue about what women are as opposed to what traditional society has dictated they should be.

{SEAWEEDSWAY}
SeaweedSway is an evolving project with an intention to encourage, cultivate, & support community through music, yoga, & nature events. SeaweedSway was a term first discovered when Karl Blau & I were trying to describe the way people danced during BrightBlack Morning Light at a Great American Music Hall show, then I liked the name so much, I used it for my blog of recommended events in the Bay Area.
