Conspiracy of Venus, Tin Sandwich, Attack of the Typewriters SATURDAY @ Make-Out Room 7:30pm! + Dia de los Muertos w/ NovOs Beaches & Sugar Candy Mountain Next Sat. Nov. 2 @ Amnesia

Hi everyone!
So the weekend is here, and as some of you know, the choir I've been in since 2007 (day 1!), Conspiracy of Venus,  is back in action for our new season (we take summers off). We are performing tomorrow EARLY at the Make-Out Room SATURDAY EVENING, 7:30PM-9:45PM. & it's a Halloween Party!! We'll be dressing as Conspiracy of Beards, but they don't know that yet. Not only will we be premiering our new cover of the Beatles, "I'm Only Sleeping", with backwards guitar vocal solos, we'll be performing two other new ones, full of 4-6 part harmonies. Listen/get excited: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MMDugt8ZRk One of the new songs is an original by our director Joyce Todd McBride, and one is a classic that is recognizable + fun, and we learned a dance for it but will probably fall off the stage if we actually made that happen (one day tho). Anyway, I would really love to see You there. Oh yeah ! & we are lucky enough to have Tin Sandwich opening, an all-harmonica quintet!!!! (Sadly Lutra Lutra had to cancel due to a bought of winter upper respiratory sickness, but we wish them well and are so so happy Tin Sandwich can step in, esp since Scot from the Beards will get to see our costumes.) It would be foolish to miss Tin Sandwich, as they are a rare treat, so really, please do arrive early. AND as another early bonus, Hiya Swanhuyser, friend of the choir and an integral part of the SF music community, just confirmed that she can bring the typewriters tomorrow, for another go at Attack of the Typewriters! This means that before the music starts and in between sets, people (You) can type letters to political people and voice your opinion. 1 letter = 100 votes. (Or perhaps, more?) If you have a cause you are championing, feel free to bring a sample letter, and perhaps even make an announcement about it between sets. Also, for those of you know Oshan (community member who is in prison for 12.5 years), I will bring his address for us to send letters his way, as his birthday was this week! Go to http://teanotprison.com if you want to learn more or help fund his appeal. Thanks for considering all these elements to try and get you to come to a show, and hope to see you tomorrow!

Photo by Audra Marie Dewitt at Sutro Baths, of Conspiracy of Venus!

A few more things: Alemany Farm - I went to the Harvest Fest last weekend and now am re-excited about the land and work that's being done there. An herb garden crew is forming and they plan to have monthly workdays focused on that space on the farm. Let me know if you're interested in joining; I am going to try to make it to those days. (All the cat tails you can eat!)

Discounts for yoga classes at the Yoga Loft - there's a groupon deal of $45 unlimited for one month that ends soon... A good way to try a bunch of new classes! Or there is a fall deal where you get 5 classes + a one-hour thai massage for $100. Lots of ways to try a new studio or new classes! I'm teaching gentle yoga in the morning, 11am-12:15 - class schedule is below the show list.

Coming up - Next Saturday, Nov. 2, we will be honoring Dia de los Muertos at Amnesia, with Mark Matos & Os Beaches (NovOs Beaches) + Jared Saltiel from NYC + Sugar Candy Mountain (super sunny pop supergroup with Will Halsey, Ash Reiter, Bryant Denison, Tom Edler, Michael Fortes, & probably someone I forgot). If you want to get involved w/ this or future events, please let me know.

Thanks & Happy Halloween! What are you gonna be?

Michael Musika & Eric Kuhn's Ghosts:: New Cadence TODAY at Viracocha (CD RELEASE)

Hello!

I'm writing an overdue email to you all, to remind you of a few things I mentioned last time. Mainly, I want to urgently ask you all to give to Michael Musika & Eric Kuhn's album Kickstarter campaign herehttp://www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaelmusika/ghosts There are only 4 days left; help make it happen (please)! If you've already given, please share the link. There is an intriguing and thrilling and entertaining and true story entitled "What does a practical musician have to do with Axl Rose?" that Michael told about a magic trick from beyond the grave, told from Michael's home, that weaves incredibly into the album & thus this fundraising campaign. I am going to share the links to those videos below, for your viewing pleasure, and to inspire you to give generously, or if nothing else, to amuse you. Thomas Edler & Jen Kulbeck graciously filmed the story series. Michael is a gifted storyteller as well as musician.

Also, if you're in town this Saturday nightJuly 6th, I'd love to see you at Viracocha for New Cadence's album release! It's taken awhile to manifest this show - to pick the right night and place - and we are happy to have it at one of the most beautiful, intimate, & community-run spots in town. Also, we are lucky to have two solo musicians who are incredible (sweet sweet folk music - new to my ears) opening the night. Dwight Smith & Julia Lucille. They are on bandcamp if you wanna listen (link below). Also! As a bonus, DJ REAL, is going to do a short ten minute set, because we all need a lot more humor in our lives (well I do at least). Here's a little snippet to entice you, entitled Pushups: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KG3PcDnzb4 It's an early start, so please come & support these wonderful touring bands followed by New Cadence's big show. :) 8pm. $10-15.

A few other things:

Occupy The Farm: is still having an event tomorrow, Friday, July 5th - we were unable to pull together the music portion of the event in time, but it should still be a great time for a worthy cause: http://occupythefarm.org

Kids Yoga Update: we are going to consolidate the two new classes into one, for ages 9-14, Fridays 3:45-4:45. Ongoing! $100 for 10 classes, thru July. $20 drop-in. http://theloftsf.com

Last but not least, I don't quite understand the way America celebrates this holiday, however, I definitely am grateful for my freedom. There is a hunger strike happening soon amongst prisoners in solitary confinement, and learning about this reminds me how much I take for granted - going outside, interaction with friends, or anyone really, good healthy food, getting to choose what I want to do with my time. (Here's a website that talks more about it:  http://abolishsolitary.com) Anyway, I'm especially grateful for community, and folks with whom I can share these words.

Thanks, & please let me know your update too! Oh & if you want a letter, please send me your address! I'm on a letter writing kick in attempt to cle

Mariee Sioux album release w/ Alela Diane & Conspiracy of Venus @ Great American Music Hall: TONIGHT

Dear friends,
I would love to see you at this show tonight!

Please let me know if you are up for helping at the merch table, or with media/documenting by filming, photographing, recording, or reviewing the show.

Some press from the SF Bay Guardian & Parlour to Parlour (CoV singing at Lands End video), and a link to the choir's West Coast Live performance are below.

Seaweed Sway Presents:
Thursday May 2nd
MARIEE SIOUX - album release
ALELA DIANE - rare SF show
& CONSPIRACY OF VENUS - women's choir
at
the GREAT AMERICAN MUSIC HALL

Address: 859 O'Farrell St. in SF
RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/489075284473308/
Time: 7:30pm Doors, 8:30pm sharp show
Tickets: $16 + service charge http://tickets.gamh.com/events/299147/Mariee%20Sioux (I believe they're $17 at the door)

A few media updates:
Thanks so much to Michael Fortes, Jesse Meade, & Nicole McClure of Parlour to Parlour for featuring Conspiracy of Venus this month: http://popdose.com/parlour-to-parlour-episode-41-conspiracy-of-venus/

Here's a video of us (from that same session), singing "Wildwood" at Lands End, on a cold foggy morning:http://youtu.be/xgNQ3xAcJcM

From the Guardian (thanks Emily Savage), Tofu & Whiskey section:
"Crystalline psych-folk crooner Mariee Sioux's twinkly followup to debut Faces in the Rocks (2007), Gift for the End was released a whole year ago, but there was never a proper SF release party (and there was some drama with the label it was supposed to be on going defunct) so the local songwriter is celebrating now. It's a haunting, whispery, tender album, like a less annoying Joanna Newsom selection, and deserving of attention — no matter if that's taking place on a much later date. With Alela Diane, Conspiracy of Venus."

You can hear Conspiracy of Venus singing on West Coast Live for a few more days here:
I think we are on at the 58 minute mark (let me know if you find that to be true).

Promo video from same Sutro Baths photo shoot: http://youtu.be/urn6vICaJs8

SUMMARY OF SHOW:

Tonight, I'll be singing with Conspiracy of Venus - we go on from 8:30-9pm - and doors open at 7:30pm if you want to get there early to hang out. We will be debuting a David Bowie song we just learned (Life on Mars), as well as songs by Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Rufus Wainwright, The Pixies, & our director, Joyce Todd McBride.

I am beyond thrilled that we will be opening for Mariee Sioux & Alela Diane. They both play music that I love, and it will be a treat to hear them both in one night. This album release has been a long-time in the making, and it is truly a special occasion.

Mariee Sioux will have a full band, consisting of Sean Kae (who arranged & produced the record), Tom Menig (Alela's Father), Jay Taosig (synth and multi instrument extraordinaire), Gary Sobonya (Mariee's Father, who will play mandolin, pedal steel, and acoustic guitar), and Jeffrey Manson ("quintessential song-writer in the SF Bay area underground surf/indie music scene").

Swimming Through Stone music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa1-N2CX2uQ

Alela Diane will be performing mostly solo, with her Father Tom joining her on some songs. This is a rare SF appearance for her.

Again, I am looking for folks to help with photography, video, and merch for the night - please let me know if you're interested. Also, any help spreading the word is extremely appreciated.

Thanks as always for your support, and please come say hi TONIGHT if you can make it!

*We are starting the night with Attack of the Typewriters! Here's Hiya's eloquent description: "Political letter-writing for everyone. We bring the typewriters -- you bring the opinions, the rage, the questions, the frustration. Not too many people know it, but one letter = 100 votes. Really! And it's easier when you're not alone. Grab a drink and tell the President (or any politician) what you want. You can write about anything you want, and we'll have a sample letter or two in case you're not sure what to write about. No one can stop you, after all: It's your right! We'll help you compose your (short!) letter, if you want, and answer all your questions. We also bring stamps, envelopes, tons of paper, a board to tally how many voters we've repped, a ding-bell, and notebooks full of letters we've written in the past and responses we've gotten; it's sometimes funny and sometimes sad."

Poster drawn by and thanks to Jessica Foster.
