SUNDAY!! is the monthly seaweedsway showcase at the make-out room! Masuga, Miwa, & Moomaw (no kidding)... This is gonna be a really neat & sweet show, a gathering of three friends, whose names coincidentally sound really good together, playing their collections of stories through song. A mid-summer's dream. Miwa Gemini (acoustic/indie/folk/western swing) is traveling through on tour, from Brooklyn, NY; Moomaw (psychadelic country) moved away from the Bay Area to LA recently, so this is a reunion of sorts; & Ed Masuga (folk/blues/country/alt) is an east bay-er trekking to SF to blow us away with his fingerpicking song-writing genius. Good luck will come to all who attend. 7:30 doors, 8-11 songs. The show will be interspersed with Jeremy & the Absurdists interactive entertainment (last month, they became robots trying to understand the human emotion of love). only $7!

Sean Hayes’ old-time, folk roots still show through at times, but now they’re brushing up against a soul vibe that simmers slowly to a boil on his latest release, Run Wolves Run. Over the last decade, his six full-length albums reveal this evolution of sound. Poetic, sensual and surreal, the lyrics are equal part to the rhythm, beat and melody. For this show, Hayes will be joined by Ezra Lipp on drums and Eric Kuhn on everything else.
This July 14th show is one of only two performances this summer. Hayes is currently at work on a new album.

The brainchild of San Francisco's Sean Olmstead, fpodbpod is founded upon the principal tenet that pop music should be catchy while intriguing but always fun to listen to. Bringing an eclectic mix of influences--from the Kinks to Kraftwerk to Jonathan Richman to Gershwin--into the songs, fpodbpod re-contextualizes principles of soul, psychedelia and garage rock. Much the way that the Velvet Underground borrowed elements of soul and old school rock and roll, fpodbpod reminds us that POP is the common thread between all these styles of music we know and love.

While the recordings are historically a one-man operation, with Olmstead writing, performing and recording all the parts, fpodbpod's live shows often borrow the talents of local favorites such as Os Beaches' Joe Lewis and Joe Miller, Will Halsey of Ash Reiter's band, the Blank Tapes' Matt Adams and Steve Winchell, Indianna Hale, and many others.

Fpodbpod's catchy, thoughtful rhythms; quirky, memorable--and sometimes unexpected--lyrics, and heartfelt energized delivery will lead you to the dance floor and temporarily ease your troubles, or at least allow you to boogie with them.

Matt Bauer's Chasing the Moon

To open the night, we are premiering Matt Bauer's episode of Chasing the Moon on the night of the full thunder moon. 

After writing an entire album centered on the unsolved 1968 murder of a girl near his childhood home (2008’s The Island Moved in the Storm), Matt Bauer has again turned to the subject of his native Kentucky with The Jessamine County Book of the Living (Crossbill Records), a record that is an intimate, personal, and often fantastical interpretation of the natural world.

Along with Bauer’s unique banjo melodies, played in a style that owes as much to Indonesian gamelan as it does to the music of Appalachia, the album boasts nearly 20 guest musicians from his current home of Brooklyn and his former home, San Francisco. Among them are frequent collaborator Jolie Holland, Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projectors), Mariee Sioux, Jay and Alex Foote (Sufjan Stevens, Welcome Wagon), and a ten piece orchestra of strings, brass, woodwinds, vibraphone and chimes.

As the past two episodes show, Chasing the Moon is branching out now to include artists outside of the Bay Area, though Matt lived in SF for some time.

hey everyone,

recently my friend bryant (aka beeface killah of the beehavers) was chatting with me & asked how long seaweedsway had been going. i realized it's been 7 years since i've been promoting here in the bay area. crazy! then we realized the show we were working on together would be on 7-7. perfect! we decided to celebrate 7 years of seaweedsway on 7-7, which is today. yay!

i'm very grateful that emily took the time to ask these questions. it made me think more about what this project is, and is perhaps becoming, as a community effort, and i hope you'll take the time to read it. thanks for being a part of it.

seaweedsway started with the weekly email list & blog, basically. thank you to all who have kept up with it over the years, even if you don't live here. my intention with this is to share the music i love & if you live here, maybe we get to meet up at these shows, have fun experiences, hang out, & hear good music. or practice yoga, dance, or even farm & garden together. if you are out of town or don't go to shows, i hope you listen to the bands sometimes & hear new sounds that might stay with you.

and tonight! we are celebrating seaweedsway's 7th anniversary at amnesia, with a kick-ass show. collin ludlow-mattson & the folks are releasing their cd, which features collin, matt adams (who also produced the album), lucas boilon, indianna hale, & sleepy todd. "the folks" tonight will include sean olmstead & will halsey as well. matt adams of the blank tapes is releasing a picnic plate vinyl of the song Double Rainbow, & will be joined by bandmembers will, sean, & maybe steve winchell (if he's back from the rainbow gathering on time). the beehavers are whole-heartedly opening the night, with their voodoo folk-rock highly dance-able tunes. show starts at 9 and is $7-10.

You would have to share a drum set (yours or ours) with one of the current bands due to lack of space, though there is ample rehearsal and storage space for your band in the room. This is a very special show, and it's an honor for SeaweedSway to present it. Sonya Cotton, Honeycomb, and Ever Isles' music in combination will be profound. Sonya's music, through beautifully woven harmonies, brings appreciation for who and what we have in our lives now, and evokes the memories and remembrance of those we have lost. Honeycomb and Ever Isles sounds are soothing, grooving, soulful, and incredible. You're in for a treat with this one.

Some special additions to the show: We will be selling hand-harvested seaweed and if you still need a calendar/planner for 2011, great! You can buy one at the show! The SF Poor Bastard's Almanac and Weekly Organizer will be available for $8 ($7 if you buy something from the bands too). It has all sorts of neat locally relevant info - free museum days, open mics, meteor showers, fair trade coffee shops, last BART times, moon phases, pesticide levels of common produce, which anti-gay companies to boycott, supervisor's contact info, ukulele and guitar fretboard and chords, MUNI OWL map, etc. We are likely going to offer mini acupressure sessions for people between sets as well.

Description: Kath Bloom is an American singer-songwriter based in Connecticut. Kath is some kind of legend. She comes from a special place where country, blues and folk are made beautifully translucent and emotive. She has a special gift - her almost supernaturally beautiful, wavering soprano is one that has to be heard, with a clear transparent moonlight quality that silences a room. Her songs will burn a hole straight to your soul. Her music has been featured in Richard Linklater’s film Before Sunrise and was honored on a tribute album featuring Devendra Banhart, Bill Callahan, and Mark Kozelek. In 2010, her album Thin Thin Line was released on Mark Kozelek’s label Caldo Verde Records. Since it’s release, Kath has toured all over the US and Europe including a performance at the End of the Road Festival in England.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST / MIKE MIDLO
Pancake Breakfast is a nine-member roots machine from Portland, Oregon. Most of these songs were made-up on a little farm, far away from the big city. Mike Midlo wrote them. He tested each one by singing it to the dog and chickens before playing it for the band. That seemed to work out pretty well. The members of Pancake Breakfast like to have a good time. You can hear that on their debut full-length record. Sometimes they holler and make loud noises. You can hear that on the record, too! All the tracks were recorded by Mike Coykendall (She and Him, Blitzen Trapper, M. Ward) in a comfy house near a dormant volcano.
