We Invite Musicians, Artists to Contribute ::: anti-GMO anti-Monsanto Songs

Dear friends,

Inspired by Michael Hurley's proposal to compile songs that are anti-GMO & anti-Monsanto, we would like to start making our own BAY AREA compilation of songs. These songs can be directly or non-directly related; since our food system relates to us in every facet of our lives, how does it directly link to our experience of living in the Bay Area's nine counties?

We are still figuring out the details of how it will work, and right now are trying to gauge interest levels. We are hoping to raise awareness, locally foremost, and globally.

If you would like to contribute a song, please get in touch. We realize that some folks may want to WRITE a song just for this purpose, and in that case, we'd love to know how long you would need, so we can factor that in as much as possible.

We imagine it will go up on bandcamp at the very least, but we'd like to make some hard copies to hand out as well. We also imagine having a big party/benefit, and would like to involve different local organizations, so feel free to send us ideas of organizations and restaurants that do work around this. (Maybe these lists already exist somewhere; if so, even better, and we can add to them.)

Please let us know if you would like to
a) help, in any way!
b) contribute a song! (is it an existing song or will you be writing a new one?)
c) know of a band/org/restaurant that you think we should contact

Once we know who is interested, we will be in touch with next steps and song-sending instructions. We probably will ask to receive the songs via dropbox, in as big of a file format as possible (ideally a .wav or flac and not mp3). We'll also want to know the lyrics, any story or thoughts behind the song, and credits to musicians who played/ recording engineer/ studio/ etc. Plus a photo! & links!

Thanks in advance for your ideas and contributions!
Jessie & Ronnie

Go to this show: Sean Hayes & Conspiracy of Beards

Thursday April 3

Sean Hayes

and

Conspiracy of Beards

at the Chapel

RSVP: http://facebook.com/events/707518885936300
Doors at 8 - Show at 9
Location: The Chapel, 777 Valencia St.

This is a show not to miss, friends. Thursday April 3rd at the Chapel! It will actually be the first show I attend there. Will be heading there directly from Conspiracy of Venus practice!

Changing it up, this will be Sean's first solo show in a long time, his first show with men's choir Conspiracy of Beards, and his first show at the Chapel! Sean is going to tour a bunch solo this spring, so look out for those dates and locations at http://seanhayesmusic.com or http://facebook.com/seanhayesmusic

Hear/see Sean Hayes' latest song+video, Magic Slim vs. Dynamite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZIk75B-07o

"If there were a map of Sean Hayes’ 20-plus year career, it would be circuitous. A tangled criss-crossing of backroads and blue highways denoting place, influence, and trajectory. You can hear it in the deep-roots syncopation, in the dusty folk-stomp and in the biorhythmic pulse that ebbs and thumps throughout his music."

Conspiracy of Beards will open the evening with the poetic songs Leonard Cohen.

"Well dressed in suits, ties, and the occasional fedora, Conspiracy of Beards bring an energized live choral music experience out of the churches and tabernacles and into the taverns, art houses, and theaters of the Bay Area and beyond. Transforming Cohen’s lyrics and simple melodies into complex 4- and 5-part harmonies, Conspiracy of Beards achieves a sound that is both robust and tender. With influences ranging from jazz and gospel, to barbershop and doo-wop, the unique arrangements that choir members create capture all of the emotion and humor of Leonard Cohen’s original music, and inspire audiences to ponder common human experiences like romance, heartbreak, politics, sex, longing, and spirituality."

Listen to this song. Two Timing Machines by Teenager. The Magic of True Love (Album Out Soon)

LISTEN TO THIS SONG

Two Timing Machines, by Teenager (Bevan Herbekian):

A song to honor: the mystery of timing, the art of love, the mystery of love, the art of timing. The orchestral sound of the "sweetly defiant" songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Bevan Herbekian (formerly of the 21st Century, now going by the moniker Teenager). Look out for new songs each week. Bevan is doing a staggered one song a week release, leading up to the final album release, "The Magic of True Love".

"And how do you make love?
Do you build it to last?"
For we are two timing machines
with impeccable timing.

TEENAGER BIO, because I like to learn the stories behind the music, and maybe you will too:

Bevan was born on Halloween night in a tiny northern California town, where courtesy of the holiday, the first person he saw upon entering the world was Superman. He grew up the only child of ex-hippie parents who flooded him with an eclectic selection of classic albums, bootlegged John Peel Sessions and personalized mixtapes. It was a hand-me-down Nirvana cassette that jerked him out of childhood and compelled him to pick up the guitar and start a punk band. Since age 13, Bevan has been tirelessly writing songs, recording independent–and generally unheard–album after album, whilst forming and fronting numerous projects, from a Garage Rock power trio to an Americana Freak-Folk duo to a highly orchestrated Indie-Pop octet.  After nearly a decade of playing out in the Bay Area, trying his luck in New York, and wandering around the world as twenty-somethings sometimes do, he found himself disenchanted with the lifestyle he had romanticized.  This former scenester, who’d rather spend his weekends meticulously recording each instrument for his demos than going to bars, came home to write in part about what he found knocking about those city streets, but mostly about what he did not.  His long-time coming and laboriously crafted LP The Magic of True Love crystallizes the experience of realizing it doesn’t all work out in the end and the struggle to find yourself in the fallout.
The Magic of True Love bear hugs a ‘more is more’ philosophy while still managing to feel like listening in on someone’s most vulnerable prayers and doubts.  It plays like a mixtape of Bevan’s musical loves.  Ardent odes to the exuberance of youth are backed by larger than life distorted guitars and ethereal vocal harmonies. Melodic pop hooks of desire stand atop hand claps, fuzz bass and towering backbeats rhythms. There are intricately arranged ballads that move from confessional verse to soaring chorus into frenzied finale.  And there are pared down laments kept on their feet by gentle acoustic guitar strums and light-handed piano chords. Binding all of this together is Bevan’s voice. As a singer, he is intimate yet versatile marrying his spirited, mellifluous vocal with soft, confessional tones and the occasional high-flying falsetto. As a writer, his lyrics are poetic and precise, weaving poignant imagery with a deeply personal history. His true nature comes through in this music – in fact this may be where Bevan is most authentic and free.  Without affectation or persona, he gives you everything he’s got and you can feel it.  With The Magic of True Love, Bevan tears pages from Rock legends, Folk wordsmiths and Motown masters,  shuffles them and writes a new chapter. It is a big sound that is bold and ambitious, but one that a kid–delivered by Superman–would be willing to try.

tonight: LEVI STROM, The Gospel Flats, & Strange Ideas @ Amnesia

Hello!
A last minute notice for some sweet songs tonight. Yes, it's OKAY to go out on a SUNDAY!!! Would love to see you there. Really really really. This is the only show I'm working on for March, as I'm nannying a lot more and can't do late nights, or plan anything else. So come on out!!

Levi Strom is on tour in town from Big Sur! The Gospel Flats are gonna blow you away w/ their harmonies. Strange Ideas will wake you up with their psychfolk garage rock oldies soul Oakland sounds. :)
Read on to get some other updates too! THANK YOU! xo Jessie

Seaweed Sway Presents:
Levi Strom
The Gospel Flats
Strange Ideas
at Amnesia
8pm doors / 9pm music
$8

(always grateful for your help spreading the word by inviting friends & reposting!)

LEVI STROM
SURF COUNTRY fresh from Big Sur!
Oregon native Levi Strom has coined the term, “surf country”, to describe his blend of American roots music and West Coast surf culture. It’s also the title of his new record due out this summer on Vow Records. A mash of driving acoustic guitar, lush back up harmonies, and Levi's slightly off-key, heartfelt vocals make "Surf Country" a must download (and must hear live).

The Gospel Flats
Country/Folk Duo The Gospel Flats is the union of prolific bay area based songwriters Graham Patzner (Whiskerman) and Chelsea Coleman. Their vocals blend seemlessly and travel into powerful heights of soul and gospel while still staying rooted to the old down-home country twang. Their music grabs from the traditional melting pot and creates a refreshing medicine for these torrential, yet auspicious times.

Official Site: www.gospelflats.com

Strange Ideas
Strange Ideas (Oakland, CA), stage name of singer, songwriter and musician, Matthew Hable, merges psych folk with garage rock and oldies soul.

"Strange Ideas... is show promoter Matthew Hable’s [Gus Madsack Presents] latest project. The Monterey native’s 'Empty' is primitive lo-fi glazed in folk dissonance that would make Kurt Vile proud... reinvented blues-meets-psych-folk." - Adam Joseph, Monterey County Weekly

THERE IS NO NEED TO NAME THE MOON by michael musika & eric kuhn

The story, from Michael Musika:
I have a movie to share that is a visual metaphor for the creation of this record and the fate of its artists.

A long time ago, when I was eleven years old, I finished third in a juggling contest at a soccer camp.  I got beat by two brothers who came to the camp from Japan.  Their names were Toshiaki and Katsiuki.  My father teased me about it at the time and said I would never be able to beat them because they were too good. This annoyed me as he knew it would.  Many years later my father asked me how I planned to promote a record I was working on.  He said: “You’ve been working so diligently for such a long time.  One day you need to make a dollar.”  He suggested I get someone with a better voice and wider appeal to sing my songs, then looked in my direction tauntingly while listing several artists off the top of his head.  I said “I’m not trying to wait for Rihanna and Jolie Holland and Peter, Paul and Mary or any of the rest of them.  Alls I got to rely on is Eric and myself.”  He said, “You’re a fool Michael."

Here is my response.  The movie is called “The Juggler” and you can watch/LISTEN here:  THE JUGGLER

also, Michael says he'll mail you a free vinyl if you tell him exactly how many times the fool juggles the ball consecutively. It was filmed at Golden Gate Park yesterday on the first try!!!!! http://youtu.be/DhXRFi_9IOs
