Conspiracy of Venus @ Milk Bar Tonight! Sunday Steve Taylor, DaMaDa, Ever Isles, & Devotionals' Chasing the Moon @ Make-Out Room! Friday Indianna Hale & Michael Musika Attic Show!

Hello,
The next few days hold a few especially neat and exciting shows that I hope you'll consider attending... I say that every time, but it's true!

Tonight, I'm singing in the Conspiracy of Venus choir at the Milk Bar (and SeaweedSway is co-presenting the show w/ the Songbird Fest), in the middle of a bill with a goth-industrial band (The RaZor Skyline) and electronica-ambient Fuzzpod!! Friday, there's going to be a sweet attic show w/ favorites Indianna Hale and Michael Musika for my awesome friend Mikey's birthday (Hayes/Fillmore)!

Save some energy for Sunday, which is the Seaweed Sway Showcase at the Make-Out Room, and is also the Full Beaver Moon, which makes it a Chasing the Moon show too!! So we're releasing Devotionals' Chasing the Moon episode, and hearing live music from Steve Taylor, DaMaDa (with Dave Mihaly), and Ever Isles, with host Jeremy Dalmas. Please come out for what should be an amazing night of music and community.

Thanks to everyone who came to Amnesia last Friday for Benoit Pioulard and Lazarus, and thanks to those who have been making it to these shows in general. I hope you have fun and like the music so that you want to come to more shows! Or if you can't make it, check out the links to hear some new music. ~Jessie

Here is the very quick rundown, then the detailed rundown and full list (and announcements at the end) follow:

The RaZor Skyline
In a world full of bands that find their sound and then go onto put out the same song and album over and over again, The RaZorSkyline reject that formula and strive to bring together disparatemusical influences to create new and original albums over and overagain. They’ve been labelled goth, industrial... http://myspace.com/therazo

Conspiracy of Venus: 40 Ways To Be Fabulous- showcasing two new songs!
Conspiracy of Venus (CoV) is a women's community a cappella group based in San Francisco. Under the artistic direction of Joyce Todd McBride, the 40 women of CoV interpret McBride's daring and inventive arrangements of songs ranging from the classic (Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi) to the cutting edge (Bjork's Possibly Maybe) with dazzling technical verve and tons of personality. The group's repertoire also includes works by Bill Withers, Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Roger Miller.

Conspiracy of Venus has played to sold out crowds at many San Francisco venues, including The Palace of Fine Arts, The Independent, The Swedish American Hall, The Rickshaw Stop, The Make-Out Room, and others, sharing bills with John Vanderslice, The Mountain Goats, Blame Sally, Emily Jane White, and Rupa and the April Fishes, to name a few. The choir is active in community service. They have performed at Dublin State Correctional Facility and played benefits for the Awamaki Peruvian Women's Weaving Collective, The Gulabi Gang, The Ursa Freedom project, In Search of Good Food, and the Fairmount Elementary FestiVal. Wherever the group performs, Conspiracy of Venus is hailed by audiences as a groundbreaking musical experience.

STEVE TAYLOR
With a sound steeped in the sunlit tones of Laurel Canyon, the mid 60’s pop and RandB of the Brill Building, and the lo-fi synths of early prog rock, Oakland resident Steve Taylor makes heartfelt soul music that pushes the envelope of the singer/songwriter genre. A multi-instrumentalist with a surprisingly diverse background, including stints in black gospel churches, avant-garde psych-rock bands, and most recently as the keyboardist in Brushfire Records band Rogue Wave; he layers vintage organs, pianos, analog synthesizers, and dead drums, creating a sound that’s both modern and thoroughly informed by 70’s AM rock.

DAMADA
damada is a true musical child of two cultures, the melodies of china mixed with the improvisations of america. reharmonized chinese songs from folkloric, pop, and eastern opera styles mixed with instrumentation and musical dialogue from american sources and beyond, this is a uniquely accessible, exotic, and fresh take on the cultures bridged by the grand pacific. Band members: a very great singer from mainland china named Lourdana and her husband an amazing guitarist and composer/arranger Marc Schmitz. Dave Mihaly plays drums and Asian percussion.

EVER ISLES

DEVOTIONALS
Prayers.ruminations...plain existence. Devotionals is only a moniker set to represent the thing we all do upon our awakening. It is a statement of existence, and the rumination on the "how to" of the everyday breathe.

The band is Tyson Vogel (Two Gallants), Anton Patzner( Judgment Day), Jeff Blair, and recently has grown to include Andrew Maguire, Emily Ritz, and Lewis Patzner. Based around the guitar compositions of the Tyson, Anton invigorates the space with his inspired form of violin mastery and intuition, Jeff percussive sensitivity and heart. Giving a nod of reverence to what has come before in forms of Rachmaninov to John Fahey, to the unknown echos of the street musician, these songs, in form mostly instrumental, represent only the beat of the heart, and the ache to understand.

BRONKAR LEE (http://www.bronkarlee.com/) is the fabulous mc for the nite. Hailed as a “shaman of percussive voice,” he will dazzle you with body and vocal percussion, drumming, and highly skilled juggling mixed with humor to wash it down.

-PAPER DOLLS (http://www.thepaperdollsband.com/) are a ukulele slinging, three-part harmony singing sensation who leave toes tapping and skin tingling wherever they appear.

-RUPA AND THE APRIL FISHES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkpuAQIdoD4) are still high from recently opening for Manu Chao at the Warfield and are certainly ready to bring the heat with their spicy global stew.

-GOMORRAN SOCIAL AID AND PLEASURE CLUB(http://www.myspace.com/thegomorrans) are the kinda band you wanna bring home to mom...that is, if your mom's in touch with her inner freak and likes neo-vaudevillian Dixie brass band tunes, jaw-dropping dance numbers and slapstick antics.

-QUINN DEVEAUX AND THE BLUE BEAT REVUE (http://www.myspace.com/quinndeveaux) plays a highly danceable and concentrated potion of soul, folk songs and backwater blues, backed by a freakishly tall bass player and some seriously bad ass female backup singers.

-NON STOP BHANGRA DANCERS (http://nonstopbhangra.ning.com/) are gonna seriously heat up the stage with their handclapping, bangle-clanging, whirling celebrations of bhangra, the dance music youve heard in all those Bollywood movies you've watched.

-ROB REICH (http://www.robreich.com/), the accordion wielding genius we all know and love, fresh off of a European tour with Tin Hat, will pull some musical rabbits out of his magician hat, and is joined by the esteemed bellydancer DEB RUBIN (http://www.sattyabody.com/) who will delight us with her unique brand of tribal fusion bellydance.

Michael Musika and Andrew Bancroft acoustic night at the Yoga Loft!

RSVP/Invite Friends: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=164098930289154andref=ts
Songwriter Superfriends Michael Musika and Andrew Bancroft team up for one night of melodic medicine and creative crime fighting. Musika spins spooky lyrical magic, approaching the release of his new album The Musician’s Handbook of Spells. Bancroft is better known onstage as the gangsta-rappin Jelly Donut, but he’s getting sentimental in his old age. Both musicians will perform solo acoustic sets, interspersed with poetic musings and/or fart jokes.

Anais Mitchell presents the music of Hadestown featuring Thao Nguyen, Sean Hayes, John Elliott and the Hadestown Orchestra + Michael Chorney Sextet at the Great American Music Hall
http://www.gamh.com/artist_pages/anais_mitchell_121210.htm
Anaïs Mitchell's new album Hadestown is proof that music still has the power to surprise and delight. For starters, the guest list includes some pretty well-known names, including a certain Little Folksinger and a guy best known as Bon Iver . And it's an honest-to-god album, the kind whose songs tell a story from beginning to end—specifically, the ancient Greek myth of the poet Orpheus and his doomed quest to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld. In Mitchell's hands, the familiar saga is reimagined as unfolding in a version of the U.S. that simultaneously evokes our Depression-era past, the current financial disaster (though it was written before the stock market collapse), and a post-apocalyptic future. It's a land where people hide behind walls in a misguided attempt to preserve their “freedom” and protect their riches.
