dear seaweedsway-ers!
hope you all had a wonderful thanksgiving!
i'm writing to send you a usual list of recommended events in the bay area for the next few weeks, plus i want to highlight a few shows that seaweedsway is presenting or helping with this week, that are going to be really really awesome.
Tonight!!!! Sonya Cotton, The Red River, and Ayla Nereo play at Viracocha, and it's the debut of hand-harvested seaweed for sale at SeaweedSway shows!!! The Red River are touring from Long Beach (though I think they used to hail from Portland), in support of their new album, Little Songs about the Big Picture, which is really really good. Come see them while you have the chance, and enjoy two of the Bay Area's finest songstresses, Sonya and Ayla, all together for one night, in the wonderful antique shop Viracocha. Doors 7:30 / Show at 8.
Thursday! Another big night - the record release of Annie Bacon's Folk Opera - promises to be incredible. Not only will you witness a locally grown folk opera, that was written and composed on the ukulele by Annie, but all proceeds go to benefit The Liberation Institute, a local mental health non-profit! Audiafauna from Santa Cruz co-headline, and The Seedy Naturalists open, in the beautiful historical Swedish American Hall. The live show and recording feature Joe Lewis (Os Beaches, Honeycomb) on the upright bass, Elizabeth Greenblatt (the OSHEN) singing the lead character, Joel Dean vocalizing the Old Man and the Mechanic, Savannah Jo Lack (Ruth Gerson), giving voice to Aunt Sara and playing fiddle, Annie Bacon playing the ukulele and singing Rita, the waitress, Dave Scott (Boz Scaggs, Rosemary Clooney) on trumpet, and a Townsfolk Choir of Bay Area singers.
Saturday: Peter Case, Sean Hayes, and Kasey Anderson are playing at Amnesia! 9pm.
Details for these shows and more are below. Hope to see you at as many of them as you can fit in. Thanks for reading!

Annie Bacon’s Folk Opera – written and composed on the ukulele, funded by its community via Kickstarter.com, and recorded live at The Tower Studios in San Francisco's Mission District – is set to release on Thursday December 2nd at the Swedish American Hall, as part of a benefit for the community mental health non-profit Liberation Institute. Santa Cruzian phenom Audiafauna co-headlines and the Seedy Naturalists open. Tickets for the show are $12advance/$15door, or $40 for a VIP ticket which includes dinner and a meet/greet with the artists. Tickets available at http://www.theFolkOpera.com or by visiting the Swedish American Hall’s calender at http://www.cafedunord.com/?temp=calendar.
The Folk Opera is a haunting and triumphant extended musical suite tracing the events of a single afternoon that expand into life-changing moments for a few different people in a small town, written for ukulele, upright bass, fiddle, trumpet, and multiple voices. Described by various delighted listeners as a diverse and eclectic cross between A Prairie Home Companion, Neko Case, Jeff Darnielle, Patty Griffin, and Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” Annie Bacon’s The Folk Opera is, in fact, a musical world unto itself, with few, if any, antecedents in musical history. Its haunting and simple melodies, beautiful soaring harmonies and captivating folk and bluegrass rhythms are memorable after only one hearing, and the characters are so indelibly drawn, you’ll feel like you know them.
