hello everyone, from wintery ohio. happy thanksgiving & buy nothing day!
here are a few things to start with, then please scroll down the events list:
1) we're having a holiday eco-craft fair at the yoga loft on saturday december 19th all day (if all the details are sorted out soon). if you would like to participate by making stuff (or if you just want more info), please let me know ASAP. 321 divisadero st. @ page st. http://theloftsf.com can give you a sense of the space if you have't been yet.
2) next everything swap & sewing party will be in mid-january sometime, at the caretakers house again. save the good stuff you need to get rid of anyway! the one this past sunday was so much fun and very fruitful, so we wanted to get started planning the next one already. we think this will be a good time to have it as people can get rid of unwanted gifts or just do a general closet/house clean-out for the new year.
3) also, please save the dates for two big december holiday shows:
a) the next SEAWEEDSWAY SHOWCASE is SUNDAY DECEMBER 20th w/ kacey johansing, garrett pierce, ramon & jessica, & the wonderful jeremy dalmas mc'ing. 7:30-11pm.
b) the next CONSPIRACY OF VENUS choir show is the day before, SATURDAY DECEMBER 19th at the rickshaw stop with rupa & the april fishes & conspiracy of beards. 8pm doors, 9pm start. we (Conspiracy of Venus) go first!
thanks for your support,
jessie

Toshio Hirano at the Rite Spot Cafe. 17th & folsom.
9:00 pm
free
TOSHIO HIRANO was born in Tokyo in the 1950's. Postwar Japan embraced everything American, including American popular music. As a teenager he became interested in bluegrass and country music. One of his first loves was the great John Duffy and The Country Gentleman. He later became inspired by the Mississippi legend, Jimmie Rodgers. Toshio learned to play banjo, guitar and mandolin and started a family band with his brother and cousin, called The Sunny Bluegrass Boys. He continued playing music through college and then emigrated to the USA to pursue his love of this music. He has lived in Atlanta, Nashville, Minneapolis and Austin, Texas. San
Francisco has been his home since 1986 and he plays regularly in cafes and bars around town. The deep romantic nature of country music, its' tales of trains and cowboys and broken hearts continues to sustain Toshio's imagination and art.
"His faithful, respectful renditions of heartbreaking country tunes, with
substantial nods
to legends like Jimmie Rodgers, is something to behold."

The Sandwitches & Pale Hoarse at the Rite SPot. 17th & folsom.
EARLY SHOW 6:00 pm
$5 bucks (100% of the door to musicians)
http://www.myspace.com/thesandwitches
The Sandwitches is the new project from Heidi Alexander + Grace Cooper, both formerly of like-minded SF band the Fresh & Onlys. They have been described as "what it would sound like for a band on Woodsist to cover Fleetwood Mac's...Tusk" and also "a Holy Communion of Roky Erickson and Stevie Nicks."
http://www.myspace.com/palehoarse
"Imagined the shipwrecked lovechild of Karen Dalton and Nick Cave singing up from a watery grave, or Jesus and Mary hanging out at night, harmonizing under bright stars in the desert. Like any good ministry, Pale Hoarse has built a devoted following that is expanding gracefully, gleefully, with each show they play. This is music for lovers, for sinners, for makers and seers. It's tortured and tainted, it's gorgeous and glorious."
12-1 tuesday.

Note: Caretakers House Yoga is cancelled this week - my flight gets in at 10pm, a bit too late for the 6:15 class. Please come next week (& practice on your own or let me know if you want a suggestion for another class)!
Long Night's Moon: A Songbird Festival Presentation at El Valenciano.
1153 Valencia St.
From Press Release:
Please join us for a very special gathering of east and west bay talents! Each act on this bill is not only a phenomenal performer but also a totally unique singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist approaching her music in a creative way -- be it on banjo, accordion, fiddle, or ukulele.
***Uni and her Ukelele***
Uni, the neo-vintage pop chanteuse/raconteur gathered up kickpants, a rockhawk and magical ruby slippers for the first time in 2004 and her 20’s punk movement has been gathering strength ever since. Her original and sincere take on the Ukelele coupled with her sweetly stirring and sometimes-haunting refrains unite to conjure the spectrum of catharsis.
http://www.myspace.com/uniherukelele
***Dina Maccabee Band***
What do Wilco, Donovan, and Duncan Sheik have in common? Why, they've all shared a stage with Dina Maccabee of course. Dina has performed with countless Bay Area bands on fiddle and vocals, and now it's time to drop the curtain on her very own set of sad songs for rocking out.
with Roger Riedelbauer, guitar, Eric Perney, bass, and Eric Kuhn, drums
http://www.myspace.com/dinamaccabee
***Whiskey & Women***
Featuring members of Culann's Hounds and The Whoreshoes, the girls of Whiskey and Women dish up a tasty mix of old-timey, Cajun, and Irish music. Spawned from late nights of Jameson-influenced tunes and singalongs, as well as playing music on the streets of San Francisco and Edinburgh, Renee de la Prade and Joan Wilson Rueter create a delicious blend of fiddle, accordion, boot stompin' and hollerin' as Whiskey and Women.
http://www.myspace.com/whiskeyandwomenmusic
***Paper Crocodiles***
"We're an old-timey, origami songwriting & noisemaking collaboration, a paper lagoon bubbling over with folk, rock, bluegrass, country, and americana."
