dear friends,
thank you all for a great year!

realizing all of the great offerings of the community, i've been inspired to write up a list of gift ideas. pass it on if you'd like, & feel free to send me more ideas. it's an initial brainstorm. the list includes sean hayes' music, guitar lessons, meditation, yoga, massage, herbs, plants, & the sf poor bastard's almanac. just a few of my favorite things.

also, for your 2014 calendars: the next show i'm working on is saturday january 25th at the starry plough in berkeley, with conspiracy of venus & the glasses & one more band tba.

& please save the date: wed. feb 19th (my birthday eve), will be shareef ali's album release, w/ whiskerman & sparkbox (kelly mcfarling & megan keely) at bottom of the hill.

thank you again & happy winter solstice!
love from ohio, jessie

***COMMUNITY GIVING IDEAS***

MUSIC
There are many local artists with new albums & songs out. Get them for yourself and your friends! If you want ideas of artists, let me know. Here is a great artist, to start with...

SEAN HAYES is an independent artist (puts out his own albums), and so your support helps keep the music going, really. He is currently releasing one song at a time instead of an album, to get the songs out there faster, so you can support by purchasing the new song, going to upcoming shows, or buying the bundles of merch at http://seanhayesmusic.com

Right now, there are deals on bundles of autographed CDs, a new bottle opener with the lyric "Hearts All Full of Beats, The Stars All Full of Night", t-shirts, and back catalog of music.

Local shows coming up; tix to these make great gifts!
January 18th at the HopMonk in Sebastopol, CA: BUY TICKETS
+ a special Valentine's Day Show w/ Eric & Erica opening, February 14th at the New Parish in Oakland, CA: BUY TICKETS

Also, here is the new music video for the song "Magic Slim vs Dynamite": WATCH VIDEO + buy the song if you like it.
"The song is a classic tale of two men dance battling on the street for money, fame and of course a woman. For the video we got a group of friends together and had a dance party in my backyard! The song is the first in a "series of singles" I hope to put out over the next year."

GIVE BACK to the community

this list was posted today, by Jessica Weiss, as a way that "techies" can give back in the SF Bay Area, but really anyone who has some $ can give or time to donate can give to these organizations.

Housing Advocacy Organizations
San Francisco Tenants' Union and Housing Rights Committee: Great organizations that provide tenants' rights counseling and pro-renter political advocacy in San Francisco.

Causa Justa/Just Cause: Grassroots political organizing group based in SF and Oakland. Doing a lot of work against gentrification in communities of color (particularly in the Mission).

Tenants Together: Organizing for tenants' rights statewide, particularly working to repeal the Ellis Act (misuse of the Ellis Act is why many San Franciscans are being illegally evicted right now).

Eviction Defense Collaborative: provides legal counseling and one-time no-interest loans for tenants facing eviction.

Homeless Youth Alliance: This organization does amazing, harm reduction-based work with homeless youth in San Francisco. After their landlord's raised their rent earlier this year, they are being forced to close their drop-in center the day after Christmas, this year. They could really use the support!

Housing Development
Community Housing Partnership: Provides and runs supportive housing for formerly homeless families and individuals in San Francisco.

San Francisco Community Land Trust: Provides permanently affordable housing opportunities for lower income San Franciscans through community ownership of land.

Mercy Housing: A national affordable housing developer with a strong Bay Area presence, serving families, seniors and people with special needs

Jessica Weiss suggests: "If you contribute as a result of this list, please document it here - let's see how much we can raise - pass along!"
